Hi everyone,

My first post here, but probably not my last.

I am buying a 2001 or 2002 GCL for my recently-graduated son. He has said he doesn't want a car with the AWD option, as it messes up the gas mileage and is more maintenance-intensive. He would prefer the 4WD version.

Is this true? Thanks.

Hal

It's all a matter of preference. The good thing about the Quadradrive system, (if I'm not mistaken) is that even though the 4wd shift select says "4 All-Time", unless traction is comprimised, the vehicle is being driven by the rear wheels. Once slippage is detected, torque is then transferred to the front wheels to gain traction. The Quadradrive system also can also be shifted into 4 low. So in this instance, it isn't a true AWD system as in all 4 wheels are continuously being driven as much as it is an automatic 4 wheel drive system. Really, gas mileage is only an issue depending on how the owner drives the vehicle. As far as being maintanence intensive -probably no more than any other 4wd system. I could be wrong though, some other more experienced members can chime in. I prefer part time 4wd personally. I like being able to decide when 4wd is needed and when it isn't.

I would definitely go with 4WD...
Saves up gas and gives a lot more driving flexibility than AWD...

I just picked up a awd grand this week I have a 4wd explorer also, the explorer is more fun in the snow so far. It's nice to just run in 2wd unless the 4x is needed.

I have the AWD Jeep GCL and its not only for the snow - in the rain there's a very noticeable improvement in the car's handling, esp on the hwy. Plus I have over 240K without any issues whatsoever. It just feels more stable and sure-footed then my other Jeep with 4WD.
