I have a 98 grand cherokee 4.0 4x4. The transmission is shot the overdrive planetary gear went out and tore up a lot of stuff in the rear housing. I have been looking for a pull out a a wrecking yard and they all tell me that it has to come from a 98 and have seen it on several post on many sights. What is the difference and can I swap out some stuff on a different model and make it work. All help and advice is greatly appreciated.

 

AFAIK any 42re prior to '99 will work. They came in the 4.0 Grand Cherokees after they stopped using the AW4. If you are handy, you can buy a rebuilt overdrive housing and swap it in.

 

that's what I have been looking at doing. since I have not been able to find a 98 model close. But I can buy the whole transmission for $100 or $200 more and have some spare parts.
