Default 1995 grandcherokee larado 4x4 tranny wont shift out of 2nd or reverse.

My sister has a 95 zj she just bought for 300 in perfect shape minus the trans. Will run in 2nd @ 4.5krpm at 45 mph.
And the jeep almost refuses to move in rev. No matter how much throttle is applied. Transfliud is full but has a burnt smell. What should i start looking at first? Going to drop the pan tomorrow

Sounds like the tranny is in "limp-in" mode. From the sounds of it, I'd say the trans is toast. IMO, it's time for a used trans or a major rebuild. Probably why it sold for $300.
