Welcome to CF. To clear any stored codes yourself, you need to touch the disconnected battery cables together for 15 seconds. Otherwise any stored codes will disappear after about 50 key starts unless the problem reoccurs.
You can check your own codes by turning the key from the On position to the Off position four times within 5 seconds, stopping in the On position. If you have the digital speedometer, it will begin to show a series of 2 digit numbers. That is your codes. 12 is Battery recently disconnected, 55 is End of codes/No codes stored.
This is a list of codes and an explanation for different types/years of Jeeps. >->http://go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoECUcodes.htm

Hi
It appears, that my alternator is not working,it was making a grinding noise,I have pulled it out and is no good.would that be the reason that the check engine light was on...

New ones are pretty inexpensive, but you could look into having it rebuilt. The alt. for my Lincoln was $118 for a new one, took it to a local alt/starter shop and they made it like NEW inside & out for $49
Sounds like you figured out the problem tho.. be sure to clean up those battery posts/terminals while they're off.

You most likely had a code 41 (alt field not switching properly), I had the same issue with my 95 when the alternator went out.

Hi Guy's
yep, replaced the alternator today, and everything is fixed,no check engine light on.
one problem I had was that the battery was flat and the security system would not let me jump start the car,I had to charge the battery..
what do you do to jump start these grand cherokees ?

Jump start? Run jumper cables from another cars battery to yours.. red to red, black to black. (that's positive to positive, negative to negative)

yea.I tried that, but my jeep has a security system and when jump leads are attached the security system light flashes on the dash,I tried locking and unlocking ,but nothing worked.
I charged battery and it took the charge and is in the car and everything works fine...

When I had the '97 it had the security system, and it sat in the garage in Tenn while I went to Mich for longer than expected. Upon return the battery was dead. I didn't try jumping it with the WJ, I just put a battery charger on it until it was fully charged. It started up with no issues. Then I took it in for a test, and had it replaced, as it was 5 years old. I don't like being stranded, or fooling with old batteries.
It seems though, that yours should have taken a jump.
