The symptoms he described matched the wifes identically.. i did a search and found a few threads on this back then. I went into the purchase feeling pretty confident.. but did opt for a used component as i wasnt absolutely positive and figured i'd save a few bucks if i was wrong. Fortunately for me i got it right.
you dont know how many times i hear this crap
oh my car wont start lets bring it to a garage
dumbass mech: i know lets throw parts at it until it starts.....
on **** it still wont start and just wasted a grand.......
gotta be the computer ah ****
oh no the computer doesnt work now were screwed lets send it to someone who actually knows
i see this every week and just shut my mouth because im not licensed yet and know nothing apparently
most of the time its a wiring issue , corroded or broken wires or a bad sensor. with the amount of information you just got it tells you absolutly nothing and you cant give a good response
try hooking up a scanner and seing if there is communication with the PCM? probably not so dont just jump at needing a new computer
no one has checked for spark or anything yet
dont take anyones word for it that you need a new computer unless a mechanic shows you his proof that you do

I hate mechanics. Even my 2010 Focus that HAS to go to a mechanic I'd run a scanner on first before taking it in so they know what to fix and when they even change my oil I stand right there by the lift with them.

Edit: Now that I think of it my buddys XJ did the SAME thing, mechanic said oh its the ECU, its the ECU and I said bull****, run a scanner and check. Sure enough my buddy spent all kinds of money on a computer and had the mechanic install it and it did the same thing. Brought it over to another friends house, he ran his scanner and it was fixed in 15 minutes.

Wrong... it told me everything i needed to know to give the advice i did.

Could i be wrong.. possibly, and i eluded to that in my post where i suggested a good used part to save a few bucks if that is the case.

Fact of the matter is i had this exact issue in my wifes rig, i researched the symptoms and found a thread at JU suggesting a computer issue. Several others chimed in that they also had the exact same symptoms and it also fixed theirs. I bought a computer and the wifes rig started right up.

BTW.. i still stand by my statement that your post was useless. It suggested nothing other than what you DIDNT think the issue was.

A simple search of these very boards will tell you why it is the computer. Turning on the key and waiting for the delayed ability to start is a classic indicator of a bad ecu. It has been this way for 16+ years. Could it be something else? Sure it could, but its extremely likely that it is the computer.

Why pour hours upon hours into overdiagnosing something that presents with a textbook cause of a specific part? Replace the computer and enjoy.

I did do some more digging, got the Jeeps check engine light codes to come on and it gave me a 12=Battery or power to the ECM disconnected in the last 50 key cycles. We check the fuel pressure and all was good, changed the spark plugs, wires and rotor. I tried to use a scanner, but the check engine light never came on when the truck was running. Is there anymore tests i can perform before i buy a new pcm? And if i do buy one is it plug and play or do i need some pro to do it?
