Default 04 GC, which drive?

Hi,
I'm hoping for a few pointers from those in the know.

We had a GC 04 2.7D ltd overland for a few months. The Jeep had Quadra Drive. This I believe only drives the rear axle until it encounters slip?

Any way due to reliability concerns we sold it on.

I have seen a similar Jeep going to auction, less mileage and hopefully with similar gizmo's. It isn't the overland and details 4X4 on the tailgate.
My queery is which gizmo's might it be short of, but more of a concern is what disadvantage might we see with it being the 4x4. If this drives both axles all the time is consumption likely to be worse?
We don't expect to be using it for significant off road use, we just want good 'get home' capability in the bad winter months.

It would seem to have seat memory (excellent with the good ladies short legs), folding mirrors, leather heated seats, no reverse sensors (a bit of a loss with the good ladies parking skills), auto wipers don't know.

I realise the 2.7 diesel merc engine will be a rarity in the states buy any pointers will be gratefully appreciated.
