Okay, here's 3 good reference sources for you;

Haynes Repair Manual #50025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 93-04 All Models

wjjeeps.com

pacificcoastmanuals.com a full service manual that's a copy of the FSM the dealer service guys use, $8, 93mb downloadable compressed pdf file that covers everything in your specific year jeep. Complete systems explanations, diagnosis, component locations, removal and test procedures. Complete wiring diagrams except for internal circuitry of the electronic components.

The 4.0 is a high torque engine from the 50s and 60s designed by AMC and used in jeeps when they owned the company. It has been modified by Chrysler for electronic fuel injection and cleaner emissions. There is no valve lash adjustment on this engine so it tends to clatter when it's cold or has valve gear wear and that's offensive to some people, but nothing to worry about. In my opinion, it's the most reliable engine there is. They have been known to last well over 250K miles without major repair.

Welcome to the forum and the world of jeepin'! BTW, I'm 72 years old and have been working on cars and trucks since I was 16. I'm not a mechanic, but was a hot-roder most of my life. I'm a retired toolmaker.
