Tom95YJ's 1999 XJ Build (Family Wheeler/ Wifes DD)
#557
Such an ENJOYABLE Thread to read ... all 38pgs !! First, outstanding, methodical build. Next, that photography !!! You should sell those pics to Utah Tourism, and Jeep Promotions. Just AMAZING ! Makes me want to go tour the Big Five in UT even MORE !
I am a COMPLETE Novice to Wheeling. I am more of a road race enthusiast. That being said, I am the lucky recipient of a '96 XJ TWO Door. As with ALL of my vehicles, I already have a full head of steam accumulating 'upgrades'. Who doesn't love buying [TOYS] ?!
I have a couple of questions [I've been making notes throughout the 38pgs], if you don't mind my ignorance ... what company is "RE" ? Where would I find that exhaust tailpiece ["mud frog" ?].
Again, I'm just BLOWN AWAY at the pics & scenery ! Wow ...
Wanted to share some thoughts, not specific to wheeling, just automotive modding ...
The Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan is very inexpensive at junkyards & eBay. It pulls INCREDIBLE cfm [thoroughly researched], and you will be hard-pressed to find any aftermarket fan that compares. With some input on my part, there is a seller on eBay who sells a terrific Relay Pack to handle the amp draw spike at starting of the fan. Once it's on, it's draw isn't extreme. The Volvo 2 Spd Electric Fan Relay Pack also handles it well [often paired with the Ford Taurus 2spd Fan (also Great) ].
What was the ceramic coating that you applied to your headers ?
Also, been [researching] flares. Like to be a little different, like fabricating, often juggle Form with Function. Has anyone done flaring of OE panels by cutting & patching in "stretch" panels ? The result would look somewhat like Baja racers ... or alternatively, visualize Porsche 944 fenders .... This would make sense to people who aren't afraid to weld, cut sheetmetal, and who are averse to $500 for plastic molded pieces.
You ran a stock panel with cutouts, and it FUNCTIONED beautifully. I honestly don't expect to EVER do wheeling outings like you do, so I am leaning to the aesthetic side. My [FREE] XJ needs paint anyway, so I'm giving serious thought to the "944 Cut" ... Since you know so many ppl who seriously mod their rigs, I just thought that you might have seen something along the lines of what I described in flaring panels. Chip Foose is my ["God"], and his philosophy of making mods subtle enough to not be 'obvious.
Sorry for the ramble fellas .... it's just ... Enthusiasm.
Be Well ....

Itll probably get a snorkel, and roof rack also. The xj will be more of a mild wheeler. Since Im redoing my yj (soa on D60/14b and 6" stretch)
