The front sounds like a bearing or improper gear meshing. U-joints normally get crunchy when they are on the way out, disco the front shaft and see how much play the front yoke has. Sounds like a rebuild on the D30 is in order.

Just put in that D30. It better last for the trip. I'll worry about the front shaft when I get back, and I won't use 4WD in the meantime.

Just dropped off the rear DS to have an inch taken out, new 1310 rear ujoint installed, and DS rebalanced. Gotta work 3-11 tonight, and I'll pick it up in the morning.

Then remove the brake proportioning hardware since it's been bypassed, and throw some color on the fresh metal that's currently rusting in the rain.

After that, I go up the road a mile to help set up for the CPO swap meet.

It could be the 30. Why not just pull the front shaft for the trip though? Toss it in the bed.

If it is, go ahead and buy gears because the install kit should replace all the bearings.

Since it only makes noise under load while in 4WD, I'm just not gonna use 4WD for the time being. And I can buy three D30s for the price of gears, and that doesn't include the regear labor. There's a chance, though, that the D44 is 3.73. We aren't sure of that, but it wouldn't have affected that test drive yesterday since the rear DS isn't in.

Sure it's the shaft/ D30 and not the case? I was about to say just buy another 30 but swapping them is just a pita even though it only takes 3 hours ish going slow

I don't really care what it is right now as long as I can avoid trouble by staying in 2WD. This was planned to be finished Tuesday, we're hosting a Swap Meet on Saturday that we haven't finished prepping for, and I'm driving back to Cleveland on Monday. I have a bunch of **** that I wanted to get done before I go home that had to be scratched off the list, and I still need to find time to clean out my storage unit so I have a place to put the bike when I get back.

On top of all that, the hot water went out in my apartment again, and the caliper is locked up on the Camaro and staying that way this time.

I'm frustrated.

Thanks, guys. I know things always work out. Once I get home, I'll be the happiest son of a ***** in Ohio. It's just been a difficult week.
