No I didnt buff it. Wet sanding with 2000 grit paper did give it a small shine though. Im still trying to reasearch about buffing paint without a clear coat. If I can and if it will make it stonger, I probably will. But only after a I put another couple of coats of paint on.

XJTrey>>> As far as materials go... I used 3M 220 sand paper to knock off the clear coat and scruff it up. I then sprayed 1-3 coats of Krylon white primer depending if there were scratches or surface rust that needed to be sanded down to bare metal. Oh yeah, before I put any paint on, I cleaned the surface with Acetone and a 100% cotton cloth. I let the primer dry for a good hour or two and knocked off any rough ares with 3M 1000 grit sand paper. After all the primer was sprayed and any rough spots were sanded, I cleaned everything with Acetone again and masked off with 3M green painters tape. You can use whatever you like but I used the 3M cause Ive always used it and it works really well. Its more expensive than all other tape though. You can use the blue stuff too but its not as sticky. I then sprayed(2-4 coats) everything with Krylon Camo Paint.(khacki tan) Its much stronger than primer and comes in several other camo colors. After it was all painted I used 3M 2000 grit paper to wet sand everything to a very smooth finish. Use a bucket of warm water and a drop of dish washing soap and a spray bottle. I did have to go back and spray more paint after wet sanding where I didnt have enough coats and the primer kind of showed though and where I had knicked some of the paint. It wasnt tough though.
All and all I spent about 100 bucks and about a weeks worth of time. Im estimating about 40 hours all togther. And the removal of all the hercu-crap took a good 3 days of pain in the butt elbow grease with a paint scraper :cursing: |
tan looks good man! needs more black tho in my opinion id spray all that chrome black

I will definitely be removing all the chrome in the near future. I wish there wasnt so much of it though, but thats how the laredo package came in '91 I guess. |

I got the rear flares trimed and mocked up. I actually used the passenger side flare for the driver side and the driver side flare for the passenger side. This allowed me to cut the back part of the flare flush with where I cut the rear quarter panels. Now I just need to figure out how Im gonna mount them. ...any ideas?

Still in progress but felt I should share for those who may also be interested.

you guys make it all look easy to do ;) That looks good.
I have a question though. I also have the laredo trim that I don't like too much. I see you painted over the "chromes".... do you need any special preparation or paint ? And how long do you expect it to last ? |
I sanded the hell out of my chrome and cleaned it up really well. The krylon cammo pain I used has a bonding agent so its supossed to adhear to almost anything. It does all right.
And the paint job isnt hard at all. It just takes hella amount of prep and time. |
Love the tan! What front bumper is that?
