looking good

flexin91xj 04-27-2010 03:10 PM

Started wet sanding today with 2000 grit paper and found some places that need more coats of paint. Once I get everything wet sanded, I will go back and touch up the places that were thin and resand them.
Over all Ive spent about $100 bucks on paint, masking tape, and sand paper. In my opinion I think it looks really good. And the good thing is I dont have to worry about dings or scratches when Im out on the trail.

nice pics and it turned out great !!!!!! The best thing about it touch up is super easy..and cheap..

flexin91xj 04-29-2010 02:13 PM

Put on another coat of paint in the places that needed it last night and started wet sanding the whole thing this morning. All I have left to sand are the doors and will fishish those up sometime today. As soon as everything is all cleaned up and it stops snowing here, I will get some more pics up of her sexiness.:icon_rolleyes: LOL
After that the real fun begins! Ill be cutting the rockers and adding 2x6 rectangular tubing in its place. Building a stinger for my front bumper. Beef up my rear custom bumper. And fabing up and installing a lower half exo cage. Not to mention 35's and new wheels, TNT long arm kit and frame stiffeners, installing my YJ steering box, and converting my AC to on board air. She already does hella good just how she is. Im hoping she'll be unstopable when Im all done with her. Well... I dont think Ill ever be done with her?

Didn't come out too bad. How much prep work did you do. Including the removal of the hercucrap?

Here she is all sanded and cleaned up!
And yes Aaron, I will be removing all the chrome and painting it either tan or black in its place. Im just sick of painting right now :surrender: and tired of not being able to drive my Jeep.

XJTrey>>> As far as materials go... I used 3M 220 sand paper to knock off the clear coat and scruff it up. I then sprayed 1-3 coats of Krylon white primer depending if there were scratches or surface rust that needed to be sanded down to bare metal. Oh yeah, before I put any paint on, I cleaned the surface with Acetone and a 100% cotton cloth. I let the primer dry for a good hour or two and knocked off any rough ares with 3M 1000 grit sand paper. After all the primer was sprayed and any rough spots were sanded, I cleaned everything with Acetone again and masked off with 3M green painters tape. You can use whatever you like but I used the 3M cause Ive always used it and it works really well. Its more expensive than all other tape though. You can use the blue stuff too but its not as sticky. I then sprayed(2-4 coats) everything with Krylon Camo Paint.(khacki tan) Its much stronger than primer and comes in several other camo colors. After it was all painted I used 3M 2000 grit paper to wet sand everything to a very smooth finish. Use a bucket of warm water and a drop of dish washing soap and a spray bottle. I did have to go back and spray more paint after wet sanding where I didnt have enough coats and the primer kind of showed though and where I had knicked some of the paint. It wasnt tough though.
All and all I spent about 100 bucks and about a weeks worth of time. Im estimating about 40 hours all togther.
And the removal of all the hercu-crap took a good 3 days of pain in the butt elbow grease with a paint scraper :cursing:

And the rear...

krkx93 05-01-2010 02:26 PM

what grit paper you used?

flexin91xj 05-01-2010 02:48 PM

220 before primer, 1000 after primer, and 2000 wet after final color coat
I did have to use some 80 where there was nasty adhesive sticky stuff from where the emblems where. Just in a few spots though.

flexin91xj 05-01-2010 02:53 PM

I could have done it all in a few days non stop but didnt have that kind of time on my hands. My Jeeps out in the sun baking right now. Its been kind of cold here in Denver lately so hopfully the paint will get some strength in the sun. :sweatdrop:

krkx93 05-01-2010 02:56 PM

did you buff it after you sanded r what?
i still need to sand mine but never got around to actually doing it and its been painted for almost a month now lol

flexin91xj 05-01-2010 03:02 PM

No I didnt buff it. Wet sanding with 2000 grit paper did give it a small shine though. Im still trying to reasearch about buffing paint without a clear coat. If I can and if it will make it stonger, I probably will. But only after a I put another couple of coats of paint on.

krkx93 05-01-2010 03:09 PM

well let me know how it comes out cuz i need to go head and do mine
