Default Project Protection

Hello all. This is project Protection.
98 Jeep xj Police package.

Took a right side impact and was about to be scrapped for parts and sheet metal. Later we found out it had the full police package. Decided to rebuild rather than scrap.

Project start date 04/21/20
this is my first rebuild. First time cutting, welding, and doing everything by the book. I don't expect it to look perfect but I am proud of it. Once we finish welding the bumper cross member and inner fender I will be ready to replace the suspension and axel. Brake work and vacuum lines will be last.

Day one 04/23/20

Damage: front right side. Differential assembly.

Frame and inner fender welded and awaiting plates.

Rebuild progress 05/14/20

Horrible body lines.

Nice build i'm going through a similar rebuild with my 92 cherokee that also took a front passenger side impact. Did the accident damage the axle or lower/upper control arm mounts?

Yes. The axel was noticeably bent. It bent up the control arms pretty bad. The body mounts seem to be ok but I’m sure they are ever so slightly bent.

the junk yard donor had everything we needed. We took the whole front end, windshield, airbags, and the front differential with all the steering linkages and braking in place. Just seemed easier to replace everything than to try and fix it...

Got my suspension in place and ready for final Torque checks and waiting for this rain To clear so I can link up steering. After suspension and radiator/ac/trans cooler it will be ready for a short test “move”. Notice I did not say drive. It has no brakes.

Finally standing on all fours

Does it still have the vinyl flooring and if so, will you sell it to me!

I want one myself. Always hoping to come across one local, complete, and at a reasonable price.
My goal is to put it under the carpet though. Use that for sound deadening instead.
My only concern is if the rubber floor is too thick and the carpet won't lie properly on top of it.
So I don't want to spend a lot of money to find out I can't pull it off. LOL.

it’s fully loaded. It came with everything and I plan to keep it that way lol. If something happens to the Jeep I’ll be sure to post it here for parts

After many days of doing nothing, my YJ decided to have a fuel pump issue yesterday. With project Jurassic jeep and the YJ out of commission, I had no choice but to finish Project protection. I woke up and got to work. Linked the track bars and the shocks, brake work, and linked up steering and finally radiator and trans lines. After a few hours and a couple puffs, I had it on all fours ready to test start.

started right up
Jumped to life and took off to the gas station.
no brakes=very unsafe. Let’s just say the brakes need to bleed.
after making it home, backed her down the driveway and organized the tools. She is now ready for her bumper and lights wired up.

Windshield and airbags are on the todo. vac lines are trashed. It’ll be fun replacing 50% of them. But other than that, after a few bolt checks and touch ups, it’ll be on the road once more...

She will soon need a paint job, send me some ideas for a paint scheme. I’m currently thinking black front and rear with the white doors and roof. Kinda like an old LAPD patrol crown Vic or something. Maybe a new Jurassic jeep? Maybe Jurassic park security 🧐

I like the old classic caprice look. black nose and tail with white doors. I was gonna reference the blues brother car. "its got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks"

That scheme is pretty much what I’m thinking. This jeeps got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks, cop seats, cop floors, cop everything! Hopefully local law enforcement won’t bother me. I found an old blue light bar on Craigslist. If I can get that, then I will definitely be on their radar. Maybe I’ll replace the blues with green or amber lenses if I get it...

Got everything wired up and bolted on. Looks a little funky in person but it gets the job done.
fixed my brakes, they are solid but does make some scary noise. I figure a set of new pads and rotors might fix it. Looks good, feels good.

Fixed scary noise. The thin plate behind the rotor was bent up and grinding on the rotor. Sounded like a train on the way home.

Today was first paint day. Grabbed 3 cans and went to town after sanding and an isopropyl wipe down. It's spotty and streaky but it's nothing a third coat and some wet sanding can't fix. Then we top it off with a gloss to protect it.

Only did the forward section but I plan on doing the rear quarter black. After this she will get a fresh white over the doors and roof. One small step for man, one big change for Jeep.
now we wait for more good weather and some more paint lol

I expected this with the black. Didn't really experience it on jurrasic jeep
