Project Operation One Month WJ.

Well, welcome to the sweet land of the Speed build.

To add some good ole' history behind this build, my brother originally bought this dead WJ to just use as a parts Jeep. Originally a 4.0, with a generally dead drive train. Luckily, with the lack of rust involved for being in Buffalo, New York, it's not as bad as the other Jeep. We shall refer to the 'other' jeep as the Black jeep (due to it's color). The 'scrap' Jeep shall be called the Red Jeep, also.

So, originally the black Jeep was going to be added to with parts from the Red Jeep, but, due to the absolutely demolished under body of the Black Jeep, it is not possible. The Black Jeep is Terminal, as my brother likes to put it.

So, it was time for a new plan. I had gotten home from school one day to my brother standing in the drive way with this look of confusion, yet brilliance on his face and he just looked at me and said, "We're going to have to move all of that stuff to this Jeep..." As he pointed from the Black Jeep to the Red Jeep.

So, now, this act of sudden brilliance occurred and we were so hyped for it. Well, that hypeness has worn off and now it's dawning on us that, we only have a 3 weeks to a month at best to actually get this done, before the Bantam Jeep Festival, in well, Bantam, Pennsylvania...

But, catch being, this Jeep is now technically under my control with building, along side with (after this jeep is done and the GREY jeep is done, and road worthy) there is the fact that it has to be road worthy also, along with offroad worthy...

Soo, i'll get to the building. I'll update this thread with pictures in a bit.

I should add that I'm 15.

Ill watch.

Sorry about the picture.

But, first got it. Engine is seized up and pretty much welded shut, so, good stuff.

$500 bucks off craigslist gets you a long way.

More pictures to obviously come.

Well, sorry but i didn't actually end up getting any pictures of the engine being taken out, or anything else up until where i really started getting involved in this, but a few days ago i really started going at the interior. I DID however, get pictures of that. (plan to put together a timelapse of most of these from here on out). I'm gonna post out of order a bit at times, due to the fact of having the pictures, or in general just taking them off the SD cards, but i'll try and keep them correct. For now, i'll throw a body shot at you from yesterday. She's on jack stands at the moment, without a rear axle (taken off after the picture), and pretty much nothing on the inside.
Attachment 409253

sorry for the overly huge picture. I grabbed my DSLR for a cloud timelapse (it was pretty, gimme a break) and snapped a few shots while i was inside after it.

oh boy this should be fun to watch

I think scary, intense, things like these, are the words you may be looking for, haha.

TheRoflWaffle 05-10-2014 02:22 PM

Well, my brother brought a mean looking wire wheel home from Harbor Freight last night.

Time to go destroy some rust.

I shall be back with pictures later.

Xj88 05-10-2014 02:38 PM

What all is done to black jeep?
Are we just swapping stock parts back and forth or is there a lift involved, etc lol

They all will make for a quite interesting thread to read:icon_wink:

Sorry, i was posting in a hurry in the first place, but, it's complicated, but i'll give a shot at simplifying it out.

SO. Generally, at first we're going to swap all the stock parts we can from the black jeep, and anything that's broken before/after the Jeep festival, will probably be replaced with something aftermarket. I just got a new set of headlights, but they need to be heavily buffed. (I'll take pictures of them later)

But, yes, there's going to be a lift. I'm going to take the 2.5" off the black jeep and put it on the red one, but eventually i plan to go up to a 3" or maybe 4". I also, am sooner or later going to invest in some RC 1.5" wheel spacers (or the spidertraxx 1.25" ones). I don't know yet though. Money is a big thing here.

I do have to give him his tires back after the trip is done :( So, i'll have to get a set of those.

I'll throw the list of stuff i plan to do on here in a bit also.

TheRoflWaffle 05-11-2014 06:51 PM

Sorry i didn't get much work done with that rust, and not many pictures were taken.. I ended up getting sidetracked, we patched a tire and plastidipped the rims, and cleaned the garage. Tomorrow, depending on when i get home although i'll probably be working on it. I HAVE to cleanout the engine bay sooner or later though (the grease and oil is probably in a solid 1mm layer all ****ing over the place..)

I also have to un-bend the front left fender (i do have picture of that)

Hopefully i'll get most of this done this week.

That list is soon to come.

KEY:
Yellow- Meh, not needed right away.
Blue- Already have
Green- Necessary
Purple- Would be nice if i had a weekend to do them in the future.
Black lines- Connecting the things that'll eventually go together once they're done, or will go together while being built.

Anything i should add?

XJNATION1997 05-12-2014 08:56 AM

"Dope *** tires yo"

ROFL I died. This is an awesome build thread

You forgot stickers too

How else was i gonna put it? hahaha

But, i'm probably gonna throw a few stickers on the back cargo windows.

TheRoflWaffle 05-12-2014 09:13 PM

So, just got home.. Long day, didn't even get to touch the jeep but, swung by Harbor Freight and was able to get a grinder, some knotted wire wheels, some more wire brushes and a sweet *** new seat.

So, depending on what happens after school tomorrow? I'll probably be getting **** done with that grinder on the underside of the body.

Took some pictures of the inner front bumper and underbody. Most of the bumper stuff was surface rust, so it was quick to take off. Underbody though? Let's put it this way.. i've been going at it for 2 days, and it's still not giving in.

Can't wait to see when you finally get onto the fun stuff instead of rust repair

I know, me too. I'm trying to occupy myself until then, ahha.

So, as i have the carpet out at the moment... Bedliner. Anyone have bad/good experiences in their WJ with it? I live in buffalo, so, it gets unreasonably hot in the summer then unreasonably cold in the winter, and hear without the carpet and just bedliner, it really makes a difference.. Anyone have an opinion on that?

Barrelmaker 05-14-2014 08:54 PM

Youll get more heat from under.
But during the winter clean up from salty boots will be better.

How bad? I don't want to be melting to the floor, or anything, haha.

TheRoflWaffle 05-18-2014 08:30 AM

Oh gee, just got a p0700 TCM code from the black jeep.

Time to figure this out.. It's the only working transfer case out of 3 Jeeps.... well, "working"..

TheRoflWaffle 05-23-2014 12:02 PM

So, my brother left for the road trip to get the new axle a few hours ago.

He's on his way to the OTHER side of Pennsylvania, with the Dana 35 in the back of a Nissan Sentra, to go pick up a Dana 44(?) i want to say. I don't honestly know. It's gonna be a surprise i think, haha. But, soon the switch is going to start. Hang with me for a bit longer, haha.

TheRoflWaffle 05-29-2014 10:54 AM

Sorry for all the waiting guys, between school with myself and my brother, it's been kind of hectic, along with just figuring all the technical stuff out with the jeep (all the wiring has been a pain in the ***).
Yesterday my brother got his backfall vehicle (my grandma's old Buick), so hopefully today i'll be able to finally start maybe painting the engine bay/underbody, finishing up all the stuff i can't do once the swap is done, and then actually starting the swap.

By the way: New rear axle.. My brother found a nice Dana 44a for rather cheap, and went to go get it a bit ago. Got here, i've been scraping paint/grease/oil off for days, hopefully going to be able to throw some paint on it soon and get her installed. Runnin' outta time haha.

TheRoflWaffle 05-30-2014 08:39 PM

Just drove the black jeep into it's final resting place.. she was begging for it not to happen.. Fought me all the way up the driveway... :(

Well, good news for the thread though.. The real fun starts now. Expect pictures...

And.. hopefully a lot of them.

To address what's going on right now: Electrical all out, red jeep is gutted, pour-15'd, and at the moment we're disassembling the black jeep. I'm hoping to get the interior swapped all over tonight, then engine/other things started tomorrow. It's 9:40pm.. Tonight's going to be a late one.

Getting scarily close to the deadline.. The interior is almost done:

-Carpet in
-HVAC box resealed(might do a write up on that) and put back in
-Center console/shifters in
-Steering column back in (kind of sketchy though).
-Glove box back in
-Most of the trim from the back doors up is in.

Painted?:
-Engine bay is Rustoleumed black
-bottoms of the doors are pour-15'd
-Most of the body is pour-15'd now that i think about it

I did get a few decent Long Exposure shots a few nights ago..

Attachment 409247
Attachment 409248

since starting to type this post, my brother just got back from a pick&pull yard... Got a new fender, and the fifth tire came in. Got the A-Arm last night also.

Just un-plastidip'd the rim for that tire, but had an idea while doing so. I am tempted to paint the Jeep cap in the center of the rim. (Same color as the body, that is, so blue)

I hope i didn't forget anything, haha.

Barrelmaker 06-03-2014 06:00 PM

Keep it up.

DAcherocar 06-04-2014 11:27 AM

you've got 3 wjs now? and hopefully you can make your deadline

Yes sir, and thank you. I sure as hell hope so too, haha.

So, biiiiggg update time:
Interior done! (minus the radio, cluster, and driver side door.)
Rear axle in!
Pulled the front axle from both jeeps, threw a new 30 in the front of the Red one...
Put the stock suspension back on too!
(see where i'm going with this?)

Threw the wheels on last night....

She rolls.

However, engine is not in, the rear breaks aren't on, nor is the lift. Running on shot front shocks, and no rear shocks (my jeep can twerk better than most white girls.)

My brother and his friend are outside preparing the engine to be pulled as i type this, as i am inside feeling like utter junk. I did however get a list of things i need to pour-15, paint, or re-paint done in all day detention today. *rolls eyes*. I'll throw that up in a bit.

I wrote up plans for the roof rack also. I don't want to have to weld just yet, so, i'm gonna try the weldless
ones from here.

In other news: The paint came in! 3 gallons! No going back now!
Attachment 409244

I also dun goofed while taking out the front axle of the red jeep.
Attachment 409245

ALSO.

Who the **** discontinues a Brake-line?! It's not that much effort to keep them in stock, and i doubt their profits are that low on it that they have a reason to not sell them.
Seriously! The front driverside brake lines on both jeeps were completely shot (rounded the bolt on the red jeep, and the one on the black one was barely existent, then had to snap the red jeep's off after it broke.)

I'm not even going to try my hand at bending that brake line.. I'll leave my brother to do that.

I don't think i'm missing anything this time.. Hmm.. I'll have to throw that list up in a bit. I have to go finish a Marketing project, and then i'll get to that.

TheRoflWaffle 06-07-2014 09:48 AM

Another decent update:

Engine is in (sort of..).. The front two mounts are on... but that back is.... eeehhhhh....
New motor mounts all around. I have a tooon of pictures, but can't find the adapter for my gopro's SD card, so, nothing for now.

I hurt. I'm going back to bed, lol.

glad to hear its finally close to moving under its own power finally

TheRoflWaffle 06-09-2014 10:36 AM

Brother finished it up a few days ago (i haven't gotten a chance to get on CF lately).

She runs! I mean, we're lacking both drive shafts, brakes, a hood, working driver door, working radio, flap down mirrors, a hatch, AC, intake, rear bumper, trailer hitch, most fluids, paint, proper tires, the rest of the lift and everything being calibrated/adjusted.

But, i mean... Over all..
SHE RUNS

I might throw a video up of the idle. It seems like it hangs at a high rev.. Makes the damn garage rattle. I might spend some time fixing the cat (it's loose and rattles).

Well, time to finish my marketing project. G'day. Pictures eventually to come, once i find that damn adapter and feel motivated enough to transfer them from my phone too.

TheRoflWaffle 06-09-2014 09:17 PM

So, some more stuff done today. My shoulder is acting up again(can't really raise it).

But, new window seals. As far as i know, the rear driveshaft is in, as is the lift (i went inside to finish school stuff and give my shoulder a rest.)

The black jeep is moved to the backyard. We picked it up and walked it into the backyard, where it'll lie until we get back.

Got the doors, hatch and hood off, so, plans for half doors soon. (like, a month maybe.)

The new fender is on the Jeep. Took off those stupid rocker panels under the doors, and por-15'd over it. As soon as all the windows work (the driver door is sort of ****ed still) and the hood/hatch is on, i'll take it out to the front and wash it down, and then start preparing for plastidip.

From here on it's the home stretch... Hoping this will be okay. This thursday is coming up reaaalllyyy quick...

Once again, sorry for not posting any pictures or videos (or anything interesting really..) It's just been hectic with trying to not fail 10th, and getting this thing together, haha.

TheRoflWaffle 06-11-2014 10:44 AM

A/C done (and cooooooolld)
Pretty sure brakes are done.
Hood on.
Rear Hatch on.
Hopefully the driver door is fixed.
The HVAC box with my new homemade seals is gloriously nice so far. Hopefully it holds.

Well... Must say. So far, it's a miracle we got it done..

Leaving tomorrow at 5 or 6am, in the newly plastidip'd Grand Cherokee..

If you see:
Attachment 409243

Come say hi!

Donations of Flex blue plastidip are greatly appreciated, lol.
Sorry for the bad photato quality. Rushing to get it done. The intake just got put in, and i think it's done.. I'm hoping, at least.

I honestly can't believe we made it. Charging all the batteries for everything, wiping all the SD cards, and still have to go pack. Tonights gonna be a long night. Thank god i don't have to drive:D

TheRoflWaffle 08-23-2014 11:14 PM

Well, i must say, My bad. I did not intend on disappearing for 2 months! I've had a lot of stuff going on, so nothing really interesting happened for the Jeep. I shall post the pictures to Bantam soon to make up for my AWOLness. I'll see what other jibbly-bits i can throw together to post too.

Once again: Muh bad on not posting, lol.

TheRoflWaffle 08-24-2014 12:09 AM

Welp, i'm an idiot. I didn't realize the image upload changed.

Well, until i want to do that here's the Imgur album: http://imgur.com/a/JoxUr

It's 1am, i'm a tired ole' chap and am going to go sleep.

Keep it up.

Wow...builds like this and the red xj that posted above me make me feel...unproductive seeing what other high school kids are doing haha.
But that plastic dip looks wicked, man!

Thanks, the plastidip is honestly one of the best decisions so far, and the worst at the same time. The mud from Bantam got imbedded into the plastidip, so now you can see the faint mud that's stuck into it. (granted, we were driving and wheeling while the paint was still drying)

I just remembered that i filmed the Moraine trail ride (by far the most boring but yet fun), and just have to put it together and it'll be fine. I might leave it, and get some more footage whenever i go wheeling next and just put it into a larger video. (It's like 15 minutes of dirt road. It's not a hefty trail at all)
