Funny that you're using an NSG370. You have to appreciate that to mate two Mercedes products together you're using an adapter made for an Aisin-Warner box in a Chrysler application
Got any lines on the transmission? The "close ratio" looks nice to keep it in the power band. The overdrive sucks compared to an AX-15 though, only 0.84:1. But I guess with the deep 1st running shallower gears is more feasible.
Are you going to be running WVO/WMO/mix or just pump diesel?

my 99 4.0 is Chrysler, and my AW4 is Chrysler, and both are junk. the 4.0 has a warped head and the transmission wont go into 4th.
the NSG370 im probably going to have to purchase as rebuilt. i think its roughly $1500, but if i find one in good shape before the swap, ill certainly use it.
because 1st-5th are a lot narrower than an ax15, i can use a lower FDR for good road manners, and when its dropped into 4 low it will crawl the same as with an Ax15. when i calculated the gar ratios i would have to raise my FDR from the factor 3.55 i have, but with an NSG i do not.
plan is to run diesel until i can get a good centrifuge to filter WMO and mix it with diesel. WVO is sticky and clogs injectors, and im just not a fan of it.
diesels are ment to run on dino's not rabbit food.

Yeah that's what I figured with the gears. Keeping the 33s on it?
I have a couple of tidbits to offer though:
AW-4 has nothing to do with Chrysler other than it was sold to them. It's made by Aisin-Warner and found in Toyotas, Volvos, and Chrysler ****.
Also Rudolph Diesel rather liked an Otto engine running on peanut oil back in 1900
What's your budget for this so far? In Ask A Question you went on about the importance of a solid engine in the first place. Have you done a compression test on this one yet? IP in good shape?

well, i thought the trans was garbage.
i never do budgets, just get everything i need in however long it takes.
i DD the 84 300CD donor car. the motor runs very well and just needs a solid tune up and new gaskets when it gets pulled.
because it runs so well i have not done a compression test. the ip runs well and will just be adjusted when i get the turbo. which will be a holset 30w

Have you given any thought to gauges? Older models had it easy with mechanical/electrical everything, those issued with the Renault 2.1L even had a pressure gauge. Diesel '97+ style though is identical, just says "DIESEL FUEL ONLY" and an extra 1000 RPM on the tach is painted orange lol.
I've seen in some swaps, if you switch out enough of the OE drive train, there are adapters to get a tach signal. Think I saw a YJ with a Cummins 4BT that put a CPS up front. My 1999's a manual already and I'm going to keep my AX-15 (well unless an NSG370 shows up cheap lol) but that means OE bellhousing so original CPS will still work...

Awesome. Sounds like this is gonna be a slow build then, eh? lol

the only thing i will have to mess with for gauges is the Speedo and fuel gauge, and i dont see either of them being too difficult.
im using the steering column since its already set up for the cruise, and i like the Merc emblem as well as its giant size. the engine is shut off by vacuum so using the original switch will be far easier than trying to fangle something up.
im using the seats since they are SUPER comfy, have mechanical vertical and horizontal adjustment. another reason is i plan on welding up the rear doors, and since my Merc is a 2 door, they fold down for rear access.
this swap has been done before, just not the way i plan on doing it. the main purpose is to shed as many electronic devices off the jeep. i will be converting the HVAC to the older cable style, as well as crank windows.

Cable-driven jazz shouldn't be an issue... prior to like '93 or so all XJs had cable drive speedos so you should be able to find something for the tcase if you want to go that route. Cable blend door should be easy too, 97 and 98 were cable if you're keeping of the original HVAC system.

Neato. The Benz dash in an XJ is going to look very interesting lol. A couple with wood trim seem really nice.

the entire HVAC system is getting replaced, seeing as my vacuum lines are messed up somewhere and the heater core is likely clogged. im just going to pull a heater box out of a earlier cherokee and use the "slider" controls.
