What does your diff cover look like? Unless the PO did an axle swap it is likely to have a 27 spline Chrysler 8.25 or a Dana 35. the Chrysler 8.25 diff cover has its unmistakable flat bottom while the Dana 35 is completely round. Check out this pic and maybe put up some pics of your own ( ID tag and picture of diff cover)

Ok so it is a 8 and a quarter rear end, but I could not find the actual gear tag, the front one might have it correct?

could be, I would be almost certain it's 3.55s, unless it's a manual then 3.07s. The other XJs gear ratios listed in my above post, from my research, appear to on the rarer side and only came with special packages. The likelyhood of you having anything but 3.55s or 3.07s is slim.

So basically anything besides 3:55s or 3:07s is an oddity?

Basically, from my research. Unless it had one of the special factory packages like the towing or off high way packages. It's all a bit esoteric.

either way if your putting bigger tires on it, you will probably re-gear anyways

i mean it has 32" tires on it already, and both covers are aftermarket looking, so maybe. How would I check if it has the packages, I know there is a police package one cause my dad's ex wife had a 98 with the police package, and holy hell did that Jeep screw!
