Ok i am pretty new to the XJ thing. A couple months ago i aquired a 97 jeep cherokee up country 4x4 in a 5 speed. it had a rouch country 3" in the front and 3" lift blocks in the rear. i have since made the decision to go bigger, ha! i just came up on some new wheels and tires, thet are BFG AT in 35" on some no name wheels, but i need to get a little more ride highth.
Heres where i need your help. instead of buying a whole new lift, is it possible to just replace the front coil with a bigger one, do some RE rear 5.5" leafs, some trimming and stuff those big 35" on there? i noticed the rough country lift is only a lower front arm, and the upper is still factory, i was just going to make some of my own upper arms. also tomorrow i am picking up some fox 2.0 10" remote res. shocks i will be adding to the front.
Heres some pix for good measure:

Yes a 5.5" coil up front and 5.5" leafs will work fine if you trim your fenders as well. Your biggest issue will be rubbing when the front tires go up into the wheelwell. Add 3-4 hockeypucks to limit your uptravel.

first off, NICE jeep! im loving the black and it make me miss my black xj. now as far as the lift and the 35's, i put 35's on mine with only 4.5 inch lift and with a few cuts it was drivable on and off road. now when i got into some real articulation it did rub. i had 2.5 inch blocks in rear already from my 4.5 inch lift so what i did was take leafs off a 2000 durango. i took my xj upper leaf(with eye holes), and mounted it on all the durango leaf except the durango upper leaf because i didnt want to cut the eyes off.
this gave me about 6-6.5 inch lift with my block still in

it really depends on how hardcore you plan on flexing. we have about 6 cherokees and our club and 3 of them are running 35's with the 6.5 inch lift. it also depends on how much of the fender your willing to cut. we also have a guy who gets pretty hardcore and can make his 35's rub with his 8.5" lift as well lol. so it honestly depends on what your going to be doing but yes. 6.5 is plenty for 35's. in fact my profile pic is me with 35's on a 4.5 inch lift. i just had to cut alot!
