apparently I need to get a gopro. and wow I knew the engine moved of course but I've never seen anyone race around without the hood on

Well...that could be kind of exagerated movement since we broke a motor mount in lap one. I put that gopro up for lap two. If you look closely in some of the motor shots, you will see a large ratchet strap holding the motor...this did eventually pop loose though.

So a couple weeks ago PBR was out at Calico...the Cherokee handled the Gatekeeper...at night...no big deal!!

There was a guy at the gatekeeper that said he made it in about 4 and a half minutes. However, he was in a linked scrambler with coilovers and 40s. Cool rig, and a nice guy. We would have given him a run for his money though if it weren't for one rock. If you look in some of the pics, there is a wide, short, long, flat rock. This rock was hanging us up the whole time. It was wide enough that it fit in between the driver and passenger tires perfectly...and it was just the right height that the diffs would drag and high center...at the same time. Had it not been for that rock, we would have walked up effortlessly first try. For the guys there on the 40s, they said this was the first rig theyve seen make it through on 35s after the gatekeeper got extremely hard.

These tires have impressed all of us. On our very first shake down, pre-grooved, they still grabbed well. After grooving them, it just improved the overall performance of the tire. On my personal rig (TJ), I run the Kevlars and they are a great tire as well. The ultimate deciding factor for us came down to the price, and the success of the wildpeak at KOH. Falken is all over the place out there now. If it means anything, we did the whole race without a single tire failure. We do have a pinhole in one tire in a very odd spot...we arent sure when this happened or how...but its filled with a plug now and still holds air.

Kickass guys. I'm glad you followed through and got this thing dialed in. Its only going to get better!

Thanks Jeff...there are still some things we need to iron out to get better performance out of the rig, but its holding up great. It wont be long before we have to start prepping again for the next race in Sacramento!

There isn't much going on in the Poor Boy Garage right now. We have torn a lot of it apart to make some repairs and to prep for the NorCal Stampede in June! We got some replacement parts from Rough Country (thank you for your help!) and also have some new parts in the mail to hopefully help us in the desert and on the track...but I wont show you those til they get here

those pics of the engine cage are giving me some ideas... also what is the advantage of the anarchy A behind the seats instead of an X?
will you guys ever be stopping by prairie city rock races? (norcal rock race). that's near my hometown and I know they do a lot of events even qual for KOH

Honestly, I don't know for sure about the cage. The guys that built the cage have been doing it much longer than we have, so they have a better understanding. My guess would be for strength and simplicity though. If you look at the design of our cage, an "X" "could" be less effective structurally. There is a bar that comes across the roof where the "A" meets. If, it were an "X" instead, there would be no support at that cross bar in the event of a roll. No idea if this is the correct answer, but it makes the most sense in my head


According to the Ultra4 schedule, we have the NorCal Stampede which is held at the arena you are talking about. After looking at the NorCal rock race site...there are 4 races coming up including ours...but Im not sure what the other ones are for. We are shooting to be there for the Stampede though which is June 6-8.

The Stampede is this weekend! Poor Boys are planning on leaving this evening. Is anyone planning on also being there?
We have also made a few mods since hammers...lets see how they work out!
We have purchased and installed some new bumps to hopefully help in the faster, desert sections. We went with the Daystar stinger bumps. They are designed similar to your typical pressurized bump, but still comply with all of the rules. Rather than being "charged" they are assembled with different durometers of foam in the bump to create that "progressive" bump. I do not have any pics of them installed yet, but here are a few of what they are.

Another mod...for those of you that followed our race at King of the Hammers know that our motor mounts failed which ultimately pushed the fan into the radiator. We upgraded to a set of Brown Dog Motor Mounts. The quality of these guys is awesome...a huge step from your factory motor mounts.

Lastly, we fabbed up some custom rear shackles. We did a number on the Rough Country ones and really needed something stronger. Here is a side by side comparison...think we will bend these ones?

Another one in the books for Poor Boy Racing. Saturday marked the day of the Metalcloak Stampede held in northern California near Sacramento. As mentioned earlier, we had a rough go during prelims with a flat tire and a fire caused from a rip in one of the transmission lines. We managed to easily get things fixed and ready for the main event later that day. Due to our short performance dueing prel...ims, we started in the last position. The race went on flawlessly for the first few laps. By around lap 4, we made our "first" pass putting us in 4th place. Unfortunately, this was soon followed up by two flat tires. We managed to limp into hot pits and get the tires changed. By this time, we were passed again dropping us back into 5th place which is where we ultimately finished. We had a great time and learned a lot about this unique style of racing. Stay tuned for our next race to happen at Glen Helen in mid July.
