lifted 8.5 inch jeep COMANCHE
This is my 1988 jeep Comanche, which I picked up for $2700.00. Got it for a steal because it easily has over 6 grand in parts. Starting the parts list is the 8.5 inch long arm rusty suspension lift. Then the warn bumper with bull bars. Next we have 5 brand new super swamper IROKS 36 inches never seen the road still have the sticker on them. It has also the fender flares and custom tow woods drive shaft. Well motor it has is the 4 cylinder and currently isn’t running and that’s what I’m trying to find out. I put a battery in and it clicks like it’s a dead battery and also I cant get the key out of the ignition.(clutch to) So I don’t know if the starter is bad or I’m making some dumb mistake. I’m 18 and got a lot to learn so I choose to get some facts from yall of Cherokee forums. Ha I’m new too so if I do something wrong posting tell. No need for dick comments either. Sorry if pictures are too big.
Heres the cherokee in some mudd.....i got stuck for the first time ever.

Yeah the straight 6? Yeah that fits and really i dont think there is any difference in room wise between the yj and xj. The small block 350 is pushing it for space but the i6 should be easy.

there is a lot more room in the YJ than there is the XJ/MJ... but yea an I6 swap is straight forward.... but your gonna have to do a full harness swap as well and another deff..is you will either have to drill and tap or just re-tap where the crossmember mounts to your frame.... the 4cyl's mount a lil closer to the front than where the I6 drivetrain sits. and i'm pretty sure they have the factory welded nuts in all mounting holes regardless....
btw nice steal... looks to be a pretty sound body as well... Your gonna love it after you move onto a diff motor besides that 4cyl.

yeah im hopeing that motor will push those 36's if not i got some 31 a/t's. The body and frame is in great shape like i dont see any rust except in a few spots other then that the guy before me spray painted all underneather everything. I want to tear it all down to the frame and rhino coat it and beef it up with some steel plates to the frame. But that motor i want running first. I got an xj and im selling it.

This is awesome. I'm excited to see the progress on the comanche. It looks like you are running stock axles. I'm pretty sure I see a dana 30 in the front and I couldn't see the rear differential, but judging by the axle width it looked like a dana 35. Is this true? and if so, I'm very interested to see how the axles hold up with the 36" tires. Good luck on getting it running!

yeah its stock axles for sure lol. Deff getting after market axles and a bigger motor. But if it dont work with the 36's i got the 31's. What axles should i get, an i dont want to drop a whole lot of money into axles either. Yeah and the guy was hard for cash and asking 3300. Just like my cherokee i picked that up at a steal to for 1250.00....a 93 with great motor lifted and tires and rims an flowmaster 40's and only.......86xxx miles on it. yeah i know im lucky.

i would look for a 44/9 combo. should be easy to find and cheap. heck with your luck you could find a truck with a 44/60 combo and sell the rest/ part it outand scrape it for what you paid for and end up with free axles.

Alright well what do you want from the truck? Daily driver or wheeler?
I say keep the 4cyl and do some axle swaps. Gear them low! Or is it high?
Couple reasons...f you truely plan to wheel and have it as a trail rig, then that D30 won't hold up for too long. Some people may disagree but 36's? On a stock D30..even a build D30? If its a mall crawler then it may hold up....but you'll be
I say go full widths and have a trail rig! You have the bases..you just need axles and to get it running! Them bam you have a badass trail rig!
And keep your XJ as your street rig. Its bigger & more roomy which makes for a better daily! It can haul anything if you try!
Your gonna need axles soon enough in that MJ, so you may as well do that first! Leave the 4cyl alone and grab you some axles that you can gear super low! Theres plenty of 4cyl rigs out there turning huge tires! Its not about power, its about gearing!

I say the same 44/60 combo. Lock one of them for starters if you ain't got the cash! lunch box lockers are like $250 and install in your driveway lol!
Gear those suckers deep! Like super deep so you can just walk over everything without ever needing much power...and then look back and say, "Ya I did that in my lil' 4cyl"!
For both a d44/d60 I know you can grab them both for about 600-800 out of our junkyard..it just depends if you get a complete one or just the housing and such!
Your gonna snap shafts if that D30 pretty easy if you wheel it. And idk about weight wise what they can handle...but I'd even be worried about bending it! And it doesn't say wether its a D44 or a D35 rear axle...but I'd be willing to bet its a D35 lol...if its a D35 then its deffinetly time to look for axles! Cause that damn thing isn't worth time or money!
Don't worry about a I6 swap, worry about getting a good platform under it!
