First off, why is this in the Builds section?????? The 2000 XJ has a ****ty head prone to cracking, the front axle is a LP Dana30. Everything is easily swapped over but it takes time and tools. If you have 2WD you'll need to cut out the tunnel for the selector lever for 4wd. If everything was rusted, you'll need to replace u-joints, brakes, wheel bearings, etc. Don't forget to wire up the part time light.

You'll need a transmission and transfercase that is from a 4x4. Most just buy a cheap 4x4 Cherokee and swap over parts.

It sounds like you bought a 4x4 Cherokee with a decent drive train. I won't say good because it has the crappy head. You are looking for a rig to put it into. I would just purchase another 4x4 rig instead of a 2wd rig. You can swap the 4x4 drive train into a 2wd but will take some modification in a few places. Part out the 4x4 rig and build up funds to purchase an operational rig that is set up how you want it.

READ!!!! There's google, just type in 2WD to 4WD conversion:cherokeeforum

You'll need to cut the tunnel to run a selector lever, other assorted mounts, electronics, etc. If you don't have the tools or space to do this, it's easier to find another 4x4 rig and use the rusty one for parts

Like docmedpros said you have to cut the trans tunnel for the shifter. You also have some wiring to do for the lights to the dash and the shifter lights. You also need vacuum lines from the t-case to the front axle. You also have to get the steering tube out and put in the front axle and drive shaft along with adding the T-case to the trans. It can be done, but will require moderate mechanical skill and some fabrications.

Default Xj 2wd to 4wd

There is no cutting holes in the tunnel for the transfercase shifter there simply is a bolted in plate where it would be. Just remove the bolts and bolt the shifter and linkage in. I have done this swap in my driveway in a day and a half being as I rolled my xj and bought as clean 2wd same year and turned it in to a 4wd. You have to swap trans Transfercase front diff and transfercase linkage and shifter.and front drive shaft. With some mechanical ability it is quite easy.

Default Wiring problems on transmission swap

I recently swapped my 98 2wd to 4wd from another 98. Got it all done and the wiring harnesses matched up but the colors are different. Trying to do a pin out from the shop manual but having a hard time. It cranks but no start. I have changed out the cps. I have tested the tcu and pcm (I have another 98 4x4 to swap parts for testing). Can’t crack the code on the difference in wires. There are two harnesses one grey one black. I know one is the nss. The other reads speed and shifts the transmission. Any help would be great.
