HRDROKN's 87' XJ build...
So it begins....
Picked up this 1987 Jeep Cherokee from my Dad a few weeks ago. He had owned it since new, so I figure it would be a good candidate for my next crawler... she has had less than 100K easy miles on her. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...544da02a55.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...5816803b02.jpg :D |
To get this going, the build plans include....
D60 front on a 3 link. 14 bolt rear w/ disc on leafs for now, possible 4 link later. NP435 NP241/NP205 doubler 110" wheelbase +/- Comp cut.... |
Looks like the top of the NP435 will require some heater duct mods... anyone done one of these or similar in their XJ? Pics?

I promised the wife that I would keep it drivable during the build, so that should be interesting as it usually isn't my style. :D |
Rip the heater out and put in a mojave or similar...:D

First things first....
Need to get some uni-body reinforcement completed. I ordered up these stiffeners from Ruffstuff and had to make some minor changes for fitment and added the 1.75" holes for additional weld area, overall a nice product.

I ripped the stock one out and used a heatercraft. I got all sorts of room under there now. Super simple to. If it burns up undo 4 bolts, disconnect the 4 wires, and two hose clamps and its out.
|
I was able to get a little work done this weekend in preparation for welding up the Ruffstuff stiffeners.
Started with stripping the undercoat and welding up the factory seem.... https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...c2ae21269c.jpg Decided to do these in two pieces as I wasn't ready to cut the LCA mounts off yet... https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...ece642604a.jpg Drilled some extra holes for more weld area.... https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...e9174e49fc.jpg Completed one side and ran out of Argon on the weekend! :cursing: https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...3a193df895.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...14d464b36c.jpg |
Working on some temporary LCA mounts with some Ballistick joints and 2x.250" DOM....
http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c.../J010912-2.jpg :gunsmilie: |
This will be the temporary lowers until I get a D60 ready to go in...
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...a26d73ade9.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...a070c0a969.jpg  |
Cuting those damn stock LCA mounts off was a real pain.... the previous owner had lowered the LCA's and welded them up when he added the lift. Anyway the ruffstuff stiffeners are in....

Injectors...
I installed a set of "703" injectors over the weekend, along with a new regulator and fuel filter (all original equipment). Nice improvement in idle and a noticeable improvement in throttle response! Only have about 5 or 6 cycles since resetting the computer... initially she was a little hard starting, but that seems to be changing as we go.
Highly recommend! https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...8d69a64c85.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...207bad431c.jpg :thumbup1: |
Went out to pick n pull with tape measure in hand and came home with a pair of Dodge 1/2 ton 60" leafs for a 5" stretch out the rear. This will ultimately be a temporary modification as I want to do a four link with coilovers.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...32420bb6bd.jpg :icon_wink: |
Also ordered up a 241/205 kit from DD Machine and I finally found me a 14B FF rear axle for a decent price!
So with the parts begining to accumulate... I'll have my work cut out to keep this on the road between mods! :cool2: |
Had a chance to pick up a few items today for the build.
14B FF.... https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...2ddd46bfe6.jpg And a couple of items to go with it... https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...ff12964a83.jpg :cool2: |
So this weekend the goal will be to tear all the plastic an carpet out of the rear, drop the tank and try to get the rear section of the unibody all plated. Then I'll cut the floor out, frame it up and drop the fuel tank in from the top side with it flipped 180 degrees so the fuel inlet will be on the passenger side... and the taper at the bottom will be toward the differential.

Man you do work!! Love it so far, keep it coming!
|
I was able to get a bit done before work today...
Stripped.... https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...56b8d33aff.jpg Cleaned up a bit... https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...ee6ae8f578.jpg Now the rear matches the front... https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...5c54997788.jpg :cool2: |
|
I'm watching!
|
Too many interruptions today.... this is all I got done.

 |
DDMachine 241/205-31 adapter in the house!

Working on the inside rail plating... contemplating whether I should weld the upper seam or just add a angle to the transition as shown in the pics?
Just weld this and call it good.... http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c.../J020912-1.jpg Or add the angle without welding the top of the plate... just weld the angle. http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c.../J020912-2.jpg :cool2: |

Still working on the frame plating so I'll refrain from posting pics till I get closer to completion. Also got the 14B FF stripped and a shave kit ordered from TMR.
The big score last week was getting a new HO motor from my brother from another mother for a cool $500! The motor was one of three pulled off the factory assembly line back in 1993... never installed or fired! So this will be the foundation for my 4.6 stroker! https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...a2f0ef89ef.jpg :thumbup1: |

Worked on some frame plating and rear spring mounts.
Added some plate above the mount location... https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...0a559055cc.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...87f2b93aab.jpg Located mounts 2" back combined with 5" in the Dodge springs... https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...d7a29d111a.jpg Seven inches of rear stretch... https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...284625f85b.jpg :thumbup1: |
