I haven't decided on shocks yet, I'm not sure I want to spend $80 piece for the RE Monotube shocks.
I don't really want RC shocks either, I've heard they ride really rough! I want a little smoother.
Do you have any idea how much backspacing I should do for 32s?

Crappy shocks installed on a top quality lift kit will net a terrible ride and copious amounts of dissatisfaction.

See my previous comment on this one. 4.5" to safely fit 33's. You'll still need to trim and install proper bump stops as well.

If I do the RE 3.5" will I also have to do a SYE?
I mean, I know it is recommended, but is it that important?
I hate to spend the extra cash unless its imperative.

I sure needed one on mine....but no 2 jeeps are exactly alike.

Install the lift and drive it for a week or two and see how it does.

Maybe I should install one...well I'll try it out first.
So what am I looking/feeling for?
I'm a newbie, if I don't install a SYE what is going to happen?

You'll feel a healthy vibe in yer britches. Over time you'll prematurely wear out your u-joints.

I have seen a couple of guys on this forum running what I'm talking about just fine, but like you said, its all subjective. Since this is my first lift I think I'm going to start with a 3" and go from their. How noticeable do you think a 3" will be with 32" tires? I really like the looks of RE's 3.5" lift, but they are really getting up there in price!
mine is a short arm 5" with 31s that measure 32". at no point did my lift want to clear without trimming. i started off with 3.5".
but 2 weekends ago, i had to put a sye in a buddy's xj. in the process we decided to climb the side of his hill. i don't have a front swaybar, the tire went up and rolled the fender and pulled off the flare, so once and for all, i just went ahead and cut the sucker out. it kinda looks like crap, but my xj is not my sole transportation, even though i use it for a DD. trimming is cheaper than lifting and it doesn't sag. besides, less lift=more stability, to an extent...
here, you be there judge.
