Go back with the i6. Now as far as the ticking. Its just doing it when it first starts and when warm it goes away. It might be the rockers need tightened up. Pull your valve cover and see if they are loose. If so then tighten them all to specs with a torque wrench. As far as gear changes when changing to a small block/ tranny, I don't see why that would e needed a long as you have matching front and rear ring and pinion. I wouldn't go with full size chevy axles. I would throw some 44's under it and be done with it. You need to do a lot of reading and research instead of jut posting this kind of thread. It's not a build. All your doing is asking a bunch of questions that you will fond answers to if you just read different stuff on th forum. Good lick though

really quick kid, make sure if your drivin around, you are not in 4 low. i made that mistake in my 86 and i was doin 45 almost 50 in 5th gear. im am amazed i didnt blow my motor. i dont have all the fancy stuff inside to tell me where anythin is other than my knowledge with the shifter. i ripped out my interior which included the location plate for the 4x4 shifter.
another thing, as Jerret said, check the rockers. that could be all it is. but if not, you MIGHT, not very likely, but might have flat spots on your cam. i know i had that with one of my older jeeps. took me weeks to figure out after i blew the motor. just yea, like everyone else is tellin you, do some research and look up things on your own. if you need some ideas, i used google images. it did wonders for me. and dont feel bad, im buildin my first honest jeep and im only 19. im still gettin things wrong, but i still always ask for help when i need or i have a question. but have fun, dont get down, and dont give up. here are a few pics of my jeep so far |

a 350 is possible but a pain in the nuts. you have to reinforce the whole front end. theres a guy on youtube who put a vette 350 in his. http://www.youtube.com/user/f44life look thru his vids
