Default Cheap Jeep Story- Kodiak, AK $500 89 Laredo

I have a parallel thread going on a particular JF.com, but use CherokeeForum enough now I'd like to share my story over here as well. I've just copied my first post from my build over there but will consolidate most everything else up to this point into a few other posts.

--

First off, let me introduce myself. This is my first build thread and I think my only vehicle(s) worthy of one. I'll explain that part later.

I'm active duty Coast Guard with a few years in. Diesel mechanic by trade; currently in charge of a small fleet of gas outboards. I've spent most of my time on the East Coast growing up and then with the Coast Guard, so when I got orders to Kodiak, Alaska, my wants and needs changed quite a bit from the 2010 diesel Jetta I was driving. I went looking for the safest, most capable (stock) Jeep I could find that fit a car seat easily. I ended up with a 2002 Grand Cherokee Overland, V8, limited slips... all that jazz. My wife pretty much claimed that, but it's OK since I ride my bike to work (3/4 of a mile when you live on base!) It's also fine with me because I'm admittedly cheap, which will play out in this build.

So I came across this sad little Cherokee for sale on the Lemon Lot and the guy wanted $1400 for it. Way too much in the lower 48, but Kodiak has it's own inflation since it's so expensive to get anything shipped here (we're an island, after all.) I talked to the wife a few days about it, she was cool if I could get him down a bit, so I called him and waited a few days to hear back. He works on planes and probably flies on them from time to time, so I was ok with that. Jeep wasn't going anywhere anyways. I could tell through some time I spent on the wet grass the basics of the thing - 1989 Laredo, 4.0, aw4, 242, and 3.55s.

A few days later he calls me back and I took it for a drive; the advertised "knock" was more like a DAK DAK DAK DAK DAK DAK DAK that echoed off the buildings. Said he had replaced the oil pump, injectors, did a tune-up, it had a newer battery, the trans shifted great and it ran awesome, so I was sold at the right price. I talked him down to $500 and we went to ATM and traded cash for title, and I brought the little one home.

Did a little driving it around to get a feel for how everything was, and a few days later was going on an extended drive in to work in the morning to at least get the coolant temperature up. I was about half a mile from the shop when the DAK DAK turned into ka-tang, ka-tang, da-da-da, all the sounds of a connecting rod cap letting go. I drove back to the shop on 5 cylinders (maybe 4?) and parked in front of the bay door in time for the last of the 4 quarts to come spilling out. Shut it off and drug it inside for tear-down. I might have put thirty miles on the rig, but I pretty much expected that to happen.

Kodiak, as it turns out, is known as the place "where Cherokees come to die." There's got to be at least two XJs for every person on the island. I've been to the junkyard to look at what they have offered and there were a couple of choices, from a ZJ to a freshly wrecked XJ. It's a pretty small island, and the guy running the salvage yard has the only one here so he actually charges to drop vehicles off there, and charges for parts he has on hand. I didn't feel like going through the hassle of pulling an engine in the scrap heap, so to the internets I went. Nobody really uses Craigslist here, there are a few Facebook pages that are used instead, but I figured I'd give a try to posting an ad on the old CL anyways.

I got an email from a guy and all it says is, "I have a Jeep for sale, $100." and the phone number is posted. I emailed him back asking the basics and that leads to a few minutes later. On on of the FB pages there's a hideous Jruck that gets posted for sale, for a single $100 bill. Get a hold of the guy about 8:30 that night which is less than 30 minutes after it was posted, and asked him what transfer case was in it. Didn't know. Does it have manual or power windows? Don't know, I only bought it for the wheels and tires that were on it. So I said whatever comes with it, consider it sold. Went to look at it and man... this thing has been well used. Cut the back out, puttied it behind the seat, and rolled on bedliner in the hatch area. It's got some ridiculous lift on it, with stacked blocks in the back and 235's. Good news is it's got a 4oh, AX15, 231 and a 44 with a receiver. Awesome! Parts alone are worth way more than the Benny I gave him.

Tried a few days later to get it to start up, but the Radio Shack special alarm system has me getting flustered. Eventually get it to turn over and over when I cross the terminals on the starter, but can never get it to fire. Called the guy and he says that you have to push the button on the dash and jam in the rod on the column (yeah, he just busted out the ignition, but again I don't care.) Eventually after dumping some ether down the throttle body we get it to fire. Runs like a champ, but can't get it to grab a gear. Paid $4.50 for a bottle of Wal-Mart brake fluid from the nearest gas station, run it to the master cylinder but still can't get any clutch action. Looked underneath and got a face full of (at least clean) brake fluid. Ok, this hydraulic system is FUBAR, I'll just tow it home. Called the one and only U-Haul guy on the island and towed it home for a grand investment of $155, not counting all the change and spare fuses I've yet to go through inside.

We get the engine pulled in a day, I had tried for 6 hours total time and we were close to it, but we ended up pulling the whole trans and transfer case too because I couldn't get those damned E12 bolts off no matter how hard I tried, but I sure am getting good at pulling four liters out now. So I've got this shell of a nasty XJ I don't want so I post on the book of face that I'm parting it out. Gave out the specs and got a few hits, but the one guy that was real serious wanted that 44. We settled on $150 (rusty with 3.07s) that he was going to pull as well as put something under to keep it off the ground. Awesome, free engine now!

Now I'm at the refresh and refit of the drivetrain. I'm keeping the auto, 242, and 30/35 because they're in there and cost nothing. In the theme of keeping costs low, I did a compression test on the new engine before pulling it and it turned out good, so here's to hoping oil pressure is decent. If not, I'll do bearings but in the mean time..... nope.

Luckily I shouldn't have to go to Napa for much since I've got two mostly whole XJs to pull from. All I need to pay in is a manifold gasket (87 was cracked, had to pull it off to swap for the 89.. which is less cracked) and a valve cover gasket as well as fluids. As for the want list.. I've got a guy willing to sell me a set of 32/11.50s that have what he says is 200 miles on them but we're working on a price. I'm looking at how much lift I want to do, versus how much I want to cut. There isn't that much rust total on this thing except for the fenders that are falling off and the rockers that got foamed.

Got pictures of my teardown from the blown 89 engine. I really, really should've just saved myself by doing bearings on this one but I figured I had more time left in it.

Spare parts list from the 89:
Cylinder head
Oil pump (used the new one, saving the older one)
Distributor
Sensors
Cracked I/E maninfold, TB
Pistons and con rods for the sake of keeping of them

Things I'm not keeping:
No valve cover.. seem to have lost one of them
Camshaft (has battle damage, they're cheap anyways)
Crank has damage too
Holy oil pan

I've got more pictures to post but my two year old is getting on my case to play with him so I've gotta stop for now.

I sure did. The good parts don't outnumber the bad, but there's plenty to scrap off of it. And anything I don't use I can sell here, or hold on to for later projects.

Pretty good deal on that white one. Bushwackers (not that i'd personally use em) are worth that itself!

Been working the last few nights from 7-12 or so and been getting a lot done. Most of my time is spent getting crazy amounts of oily mud off the parts and less doing actual replacements. That's for tonight, but I'll start pictures from the other night.

If you've never done your timing chain, this should be reason enough.

Spent a few hours tonight putting the timing chain cover on as well as the water pump. Made a short night after doing that to come home and enjoy some beers.

Put the whole front assembly on tonight. Didn't get any pictures, my phone was charging and it really wasn't that exciting. Painted most things that went back on and swapped distributors since the one from the 89 had some newer parts on it. Motor mounts are installed; the only thing I'm waiting on is my oil pan gasket. I'm getting kind of pissed at either Amazon or the Postal Service.. probably the latter's fault.

Tomorrow's goals are:
Reassemble the intake/exhaust manifold (easier to put on now or in the Jeep? Probably now.)
Drag Jeep in hobby shop
Clean up engine bay
Hopefully put on oil pan
Clean head to mate manifolds
Clean up my giant pile of tools

Need to go and buy:
Throttle body gasket - $4 Napa
Crank Position Sensor - $40 Napa
Maybe an oil pan gasket - $12-30 Napa

A real quick note on Napa here.. we're an island and there's only two auto stores. Napa is awesome because ..well, it's Napa. They've got Napa prices (uh!) but they know me and I get the government/military price. They don't keep a ton of stuff in stock but if they have it in Anchorage, they can order it and usually get it next day. The other store is a Carquest and I think they only hire people that have either never seen a car before let alone worked on one, or just plain idiots. I refuse to go there unless I have to, even though it's half the distance it is to Napa. Yes, it's only 4 miles away instead of 8, but seriously.. I've never met so many stupid people that all work at one store. Not one person has ever been helpful there, so unless I'm absolutely stuck I DO NOT go there. Rockauto is awesome if you live in the lower 48 but shipping here sucks. Like, it's absolutely cost prohibitive. Amazon Prime is awesome, but just like anything else you have to wait.

Anyways...

Need to order:
O2 sensor - $40 Amazon, $90 Napa, it can wait
(Neither sensor is known to not work, but they look pretty rough. Easier to do the CPS while I'm in there, and the O2 sensor has already been pulled.)

Oh, and I ran into Fred who sold me the wheels and tires and he's maybe interested in my 231. I told him $100 but realize that I could probably get more.. but good karma, right? Sell him that cheap so when I run across another good deal I'll end up picking it up. Sure. Pays for the white Jeep again though.......

So, today I ran to Napa to get an oil pan gasket so I could get started on all this. Took the kid because my wife is working on her school stuff and we had a good trip to town. Went by CarQuest for some reason and they had nothing I needed, at all. Went to Napa and got the gasket set they had, $22. Also picked up an oil filter ($7, ouch!) and a roll of gasket material to make the throttle body gasket. Came home, fed the kid, put the kid down for a nap and took a nap myself because I knew I'd be up late. As I'm getting ready to leave there's a package at the door, sure enough, it's my oil pan gasket. Oh the irony!

Tonight was successful though. Cleaned up a lot of parts and tools, nothing exciting but time consuming for sure. After I had the oil pan on and the RTV was probably set, I got ole' Johnny up on the cherry picker.

They meet for the first time!

I kept with the tradition that any time you separate a prime mover from it's equipment you sign the flywheel or whatever is there, so I did.

My initials, Jan 2015, Kodiak, AK

Then I ran the cherry picker and engine up to the truck only to find out that the legs are too wide to fit between the tires. This engine hoist is a beast, but an easy fix to my problem. By the way, doing this on your own SUCKS!

Problem solved!

I feel good with where I am. I know this weekend will suck doing some troubleshooting of what I've missed, but it will all be worth it in the end.

So tomorrow goes..
Mate engine and transmission
Figure out all the wiring and hoses I pulled apart six months ago... luckily I labeled most everything
Install I/E manifold
Hook up injectors/fuel lines
Starter
Radiator
Fluids
Start the old girl! Old gas (Stabil'd though!) be damned

It should be easier to hook the trans to the engine vice the engine to trans, because the linkage was kicking my *** with it already bolted up. I did that so long ago it isn't even in my mind how it goes.

It's 0130 Alaska time, I think it's time for a shower and bed.

Had to go back to work this week, so I haven't made any progress. Stupid job getting in the way of my life. Had a guy contact me last night and I sold off my 231 for $200; he didn't negotiate and didn't care to I guess, so I'm happy with that extra money in my pocket.
