Default Axle swap

I need ideas and opinions. Currently i have the stock axles on my 87 Cherokee, i have had 2 recommendations to make them better. A direct swap from a 4 banger wrangler, or custom swap for a ford 9in front and rear.

I just need a better gear ratio for the stuff im trying to do with my jeep. (i like to push things)

I have time to work on it, what i dont have is a lot of money. any cheap ideas or opinions?

get the axles off of an older XJ with the diesel motor or 4 cyl. Some of those came with 4.10 gears stock. You're most likely running 3.55's i believe.

just find a xj 90 and back and find a 4cyl diesel w/tow package and take out the axles, and put a solid shaft in the front axle so you dont have to worry about the vacuum crap, dont forget to take the drive shafts as well

is it that easy to find a diesel cherokee? I've seen like one in my lifetime haha, but the 4 cylinder gas ones are easy, theres a bunch at my pick a part and they all have 4.10s so one day ill pull the gears out of one of them

the front I'd try and get a 91+ housing and 96+ shafts to kill the CAD system and get bigger U-joints. then skip the 4:10s and get a set of 4:56 gears

what gear ratio do you want? if you are going to 4.10s find a 4-banger XJ and swap the whole front axle (put in your 1 piece shaft to eliminate the vacuum disco on a '90 and older) then for the rear find a '97+ ford explorer with the 8.8 rear, some of those came with 4.10s too and they are an easy swap if you have access to a welder
