Beautiful jeep man! How do the re springs ride and flex? Thinking of moving from 4.5rough country springs to 5.5 - 6.5 re springs

 

Thanks dude I appreciate it. I like the rubicon express springs. Probably your best bet unless you want to go real pricy with alcan springs or i think bds have a lifetime warranty. Keep in mind that the re spings start out sitting way higher than advertised. Mine were 3.5" springs but gave me like 4.75" of lift. They took about a year to settle to a total of about 4" of lift. If I were to buy leafs again I would probably look into buying some from a different vehicle such as an explorer so that they would give a slight stretch of the wheelbase and give a better ride because it would give a better shackle angle without needing relocation brackets. Not sure which vehicles work though you would have to look into that.

Well I have gotten a few maintenance and repair things done on the jeep recently. I am trying to get my gas mileage up from 9mpg.

-Today I replaced the fuel line that had a leak in it. The tool shown is how you remove those lines- the metal tool works best.

-I replaced the map sensor pretty sure it was my main cause of horrible gas mileage.

-I relocated the mat sensor to the intake from the manifold.

-I also changed the oil and tried out the engine restore oil additive.

-Finally, I also attempted to drill out my pitman arm for the tapered insert and gave up after about 2 hrs. Anyone know any tips for drilling a 7/8" hole through hardened steel?

I drilled out a spark plug socket once which of course is tool steel. Should be close to what the pitman is made of. I used a brand new high speed bit and lots of oil to cool it. Took about 15 minutes and the bit was trash afterwords.

Ya I tried today with a new bit and lots of cutting oil and no luck after an hour. I'm just going to bring it to a shop.

Kind of? It might have made a slight difference...no change in gas mileage really. So its hard to say without doing another compression test. Maybe on a more worn engine it would have made more of a difference.


I can tell you that it took a long time to find all of the information for it. Unfortunately there is no complete source with all the information you need. That is unless you do exactly what I did with a klune before a flipped d300 then I tried to put enough info in my thread to be able to do what I did. Luckily I saved all the links that I used when researching so here they are in no particular order. There are a ton of them. Unfortunately everyone does it a little different and there are several ways to make it work each with pluses and minuses. So if I were you I would at least try to read through these links/forum threads and then let me know what questions you have. I can do my best to answer anything you need to know since I have done a ton of research on it.

you getting 9mpg city and highway? For now I do mostly short trips around town and avg around 12mpg which isn't much better. How did you narrow down the cause of the bad mpg?

 

Well at one point I used to get around 17 but about a year ago went down to about 12 and I never figured out the problem. Recently I started getting around 9-10 so I went through and fixed everything that I thought may be contributing to it. I replaced the map sensor iat sensor and replaced a slightly leaky fuel line. That got me up to about 11-12mpg. But seriously it almost depends on where I fill up gas it varies between 9-13 on a tank.

 

Ouch. Well let me know if you find any further culprits. Info like that is good to keep around just in case.

 

Ya its difficult to diagnose when there are no symptoms other than the poor gas mileage. There is maybe a 1-2mpg increase when I don't use the AC so the compressor pully might be bad...I also feel like the power steering pump could be part of it only because my mpg's dropped around the time I installed my hydro assist...who knows though only other things I can think of are maybe my brakes are dragging slightly or engine ground is bad(even though it looks clean)? I have done tons of other things to try to get the mileage from 12 back to 17 that I have documented in this thread that did nothing to help. Here is the list of most of them:

-replaced O2 sensors
-replaced exhaust manifold gasket
-fixed pre-cat exhaust leak
-replaced fuel pump
-changed bad cps
-sealed other exhaust leaks
-fixed fuel vapor leak
-checked alignment
-checked plugs/injectors/distributor rail/
-swapped tranny fluid/coolant-tried removing spare tire and roof rack did nothing
-heat shielded the intake
-relocated iat on intake tube/replaced sensor
-swapped diff fluid
-checked fuel pressure
-cleaned air filter....
-checked compression

Let me know if you find out something on yours.

 

I plan on doing the swap after long arms and building my axles up unless I can get one for a good Neal I just wanted to start researching early so I can make the right choices for me
