2nd build, 93’ weekend warrior
Not a day has gone by I didn’t regret selling my old 89’ Cherokee. But money was tight and I have been looking for another since. Pictured below, old rig on top new one on bottom.
Old and new
picked up the new one for 4k and I’m glad I did. Usually all you can find around here are renix xjs or 10,000$ crawlers.
This 93’ popped up and I had to grab it.
About a week after I got it home someone decided they wanted it more than I did. They made off with it while I was at work.
Before it was stolen I had made a deal with an old rancher that I could have a 93’ XJ that had been sitting on his property for 7 years if I could haul it off. So after these A-holes jacked mine I headed up to get it hoping it was in good enough shape to build. When we got there to our surprise a quick jump and we were able to start it right up. ( More on that later )
So fast forward 3 weeks. While at work I get a call from the CHP. My Jeep had been found in Morgan Hill. Near MontereyBay. About 300 miles north of me.
They claimed it was complete so I headed up to get it. To my surprise tho it was a little beat up and dirty they didn’t tear it up to bad. Few scratched and a beat up dash but it was headed back home.
I have replaced all the broken dash pieces other than a fog light switch and the lower dash trim. This piece vvvvv if anyone has one they can part with. Don’t care what color.
Finally got to mess around with it last weekend and blew the steering box pitman seals out. Replacing them today.
anyway on to specs.

Does anyone know how to bond the roof back to the brace above the headliner? I have like a 1/2” gap between the 2.

Picked up the pitman shaft seal kit on the way home from work. Every video I have watched has had 2 seals (upper and lower) being replaced. This kit came with the 2 and washers and snap ring, but my steering box only used one of them. The snap ring was about an inch up inside the box.
it looked like the reason it went out was because the steering box brace pictured slid down and made contact with the pitman arm. I’m assuming it happened when I was playing with it last weekend and as it flexed it put side pressure on the seal. The first picture I had already moved the brace up. It had a odd packing in it I had to remove before I got to the snap ring, it is also visible sitting on the arm.
I tried letting pressure push the seal out but it just blew fluid around it. I ended up having to use the screw technique which BTW was a pain in the @$$, but it got the job done.
When reinstalling the brace I put it outside the clams instead of in between them. This allowed me to get it tighter on the neck of the steering box. Paint marked all the nuts and bolts I touched during the job and took it for a test drive.

So the more I dig on line the more I am leaning toward 2005 ish KJ rear disc conversion. You get a thicker backing plate and it is direct bolt in.
Found a link on NAXJA KJ rear brake swap . If anyone has any preference on here please chime in.

Glad to hear you got your Jeep back. What are your plans for the field find Cherokee? It looks to be in pretty good shape.
I'm not sure about bonding them back together but I put a couple of 1-2 inch strips of weatherstripping in between them which really helped quiet down rattles.

I’ll try the weatherstripping. Since I don’t have a headliner yet I was going to sound deaden the roof. I was thinking spray foam too. But don’t want it to expand and push the brace even further away from the top.

look for an automotive grade panel bond or seam sealer at the local parts store, it should come in a tube for a caulk-gun. then apply liberally and use something creative to prop the roof support up into place. let it set for a day and you should be all set.

As for the free wood find Jeep it has gone a totally different route. My dad decided to drop the ****** on an s10 frame so the green 93 because the community jeep. It has been being tossed back and forth getting all kinds of stuff thrown at it. Had some 2” lift parts I paired with my buddy’s tires. Cut and folded here, he cut the front fenders and the rear quarters there. Threw on a couple bumpers that have been laying around for 30+ years. Little trash here and there. And this is where it is at now.
it is now what gets beat on when the other is being repaired.

My bearings for the rear should be in tomorrow so I went ahead and tore down the axle today and swapped breaks. Didn’t do the disks yet. Haven’t found all the parts but this needed to happen.

So turns out the gears are shot. So……. I can regear the 8.25 and put a locker in it “$”
or I have a 0 mile rebuilt scout II rear Dana 44 with 4.88 gears and a Detroit locker in it that I can swap in. Any thoughts?
has anyone done this swap?

Haven’t had time to get out to get the Dana 44 swapped out of the scout. But in the mean time I found another 8.25 that had recently been rebuilt.

I didn’t feel like bleeding the brakes and since I had just replaced the shoes and kits on both sides I decided to pop off the backing plates and swap them onto the new axle after I installed it. Also went ahead and painted the underbelly while I had it on jacks.

Little grade 8 hardware goes a long way.
