Nice job on the Plasti-Dip but if you only used 3 cans to do all that it's too light, your gonna have a tough time peeling it off in one shot. Wish I knew you were doing it, I have a gallon of black sitting around collecting dust.

My question: what did you do to prep the surface specifically? Is a thorough cleaning all that's necessary? Do you have to strip off wax & such-like?

I had 6 coats on my XJ. The heavier you spray it the easier it peels off. I did the whole Jeep from the center line down and used about 1.5 gallons of Dip. You can spray less and still get it done but a little more work to take it off.

You sprayed a much larger area too keep that in mind. It's plenty thick I did alot of coats. Those cans go a long way.

All you have to do to prep the surface is clean it off. No sanding or anything. You don't have to strip wax at all but on that note.. If you plan on dipping your jeep I would just hold off on waxing it. For example, I knew I was going to be doing this so I haven't put a coat of wax on the jeep in a month. And it stuck just fine.
Also didn't know if you guys knew this but you can spray right over it again of you want. So next weekend I'll probably put another layer.

Hopefully in the next few weeks I can get some $ together and buy a car kit from dipyourcar.com. I'm thinking about doing blaze orange this summer on the whole jeep. If only used the cans so far. Can't wait to try it in a real spray gun.

As far as gloss this is what you do. You spray it with the matte black and then they sell a glossifier. You let your black dry and then spray the glossifier over top of that. You want to make sure you use plasti dip brand glossifier. If you use regular old clear coat it won't peel of easily at all.

You don't want to sand anything. You just spray it right on your paint. It preserves the paint.

You can use more. It will definitely make it easier to peel. But I wanted clean lines. I had 6 coats on each side. 3 cans is a safe bet if your just doing your rockers.

I'm in the middle of replacing my leafs this week (don't laugh: it will probably take me most of the week lol), and I'll likely have to add spacers to the front ...and maybe an SRE to the rear (changed plans again lol) if I don't like the ride ...and then more spacers to the front (whatever). My winter project (it took me this long to come up with the funds, woot).
But as soon as that is done, this is next. Including the glossifier.
...but not in blaze orange lol: my wife would kill me (it's as much her dd as my snow car). Black. (She probably won't even notice, heh.)

Out in the trail right now! For one these baja claws are freaking amazing. I'm truly surprised at the amount of flex I'm getting too.
