1 ton xj
So I was gonna make my jeep a crawler, but had of mind. I want to build a 1ton trail rig.
Currently running the stock diffs on 33mud terrains.
What I already have:
- front ford dana 60
-rear 14 bolt with calipers
- 7/8heim joints
Needs:
- front long travel
-lockers
-gears (456) im not sure if that gear ratio will be good for on and offraod? (Not a daily driver)
My question is, will this be a good idea to go 1ton for just a trail rig and of course Glamis?

1 ton would not be too much. but I also surmise that you are in over your head already. would 1 ton be good for trails? what gears? you've got some very basic questions for some very advanced plans

I mean u can never go wrong with a 1ton, so I think it would be good for trails.... as for gear ratio, im not to sure what I should throw on the axles. Im also thinking of norrowing them, idk if that'll be a good idea?

Tons are awesome. Full width tons are even better if you can get away with a lot of rubber sticking out in your neck of the woods. I am starting a similar swap of my own, and was lucky enough to have a set of kingpin 60's kicking around for free.
Be prepared to spend alot of cash, and go through a lot of headache. But it will be badass in the end. Aint nothing wrong with learning as you go.

if your crawling go as deap as you can on the gears I think its 5.13 on the those axle but Im pry wrong. also your going to need to get frame stiffners and a cage for saftey and to prevent the 1ton axles from ripping you xj apart.
1tons are great but its not as easy as throwing some brakets on the axles and bolting them up.

Balljoint over Kingpin? I myself would much rather run a kp not only for strength but for steering options as well. And if I recall correctly the sd axles are unit bearing.

You can get high steer knuckles for ballpoint axles. Yes they are unit bearing hubs, but you're talking about hub bearings made for an 8k pound truck pulling tons more weight...on a 4k pound XJ. Those hub bearings are not gonna be a weak point.

It's the weight of the tire that's gonna matter. If you're wheeling a 40" tire with beadlocks I think they might be the weak point along with the balljoints. There's a reason most guys run KP 60s.

You haven't seen one then have you? The ball joints are the size of coke cans. Bigger brakes, 35 spline shafts inner and outer stock, 1.5" thick shafts, huge unit bearings, and its overall way bigger than a KP 60. The only advantage I would give the KP axle is the ease of bolt on hi steer. Read about the new ones on pirate... They're the way to go.
Plus I only paid $700 for the 60/10.5 pair. KP's are $900-$1200 all day by themselves.
