Yeah -- If you spend $100 on a diff guard, why not spend just over $100 on a new diff cover, especially in the front.
Ruffstuffspecialties.com has some sweet ones and they are BURL.
https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f10/di...-8-25-a-38099/
Discount code: CHEROKEE - you probably get 10% off, as well.
These are under $100 and are 3/8" steel, like ruffstuff. I'd support a vendor if you have the cash. http://www.bluetorchfab.com/Parts-Fo...-Cherokee.aspx
I have never wheeled my rig. If I did, I'd have one.
I saw on quadratec a warn guard is over $100 and the superlift guards are over $115.
I just think a differential skid is more prone to cause issues, whereas a beefy diff cover would accomplish more protection.

I think I'll be replacing rear tire carrier with a new exhaust header on my wishlist. I'd still love to do a bumper, but think I can just make due with my rusting rear bumper, for now.
MALLAMO - you were talking about a bored TB, here's what JP magazine has to say.
.. and this is what's selling me on finishing the optional bolt on performance mods:

Also, whether I buy a highway car or not, I think I'd gladly put a new engine in the jeep should it need one.

I had to use google's cached JP article, I think this link should get you there. I pasted much of it. http://webcache.googleusercontent.co...&gl=us&strip=1
Their site seems to be down.
I'll be searching stuff online and posting my thoughts/finds here. If I'm not mistaken the parts list is: BANKS header, flextube to downpipe, maybe a felpro gasket as they make the best, and perhaps an aftermarket CAT. If it doesn't break the bank, I may buy the parts and have everything installed and welded together. My 2.5 catback is all clamped.
I was thinking cowl intake, but might opt to save money. Rather than ghetto fab a PVC one, I might replace my accordion rubber intake tube with a smooth aluminum one to help intake airflow. Spectre has them for about $60. I'll shop around.
MALLAMO - you were talking about a bored TB, here's what JP magazine has to say.
62mm Throttle Body
The factory throttle body on a 4.0L HO engine is 60mm in diameter. There are plenty of 62mm (and even 68mm) aftermarket options available to allow your 4.0L to ingest more air. Generally, the bored throttle body will only make a noticeable difference from the driver’s seat if you’re running an air intake, high-flow exhaust, and maybe a header. We don’t really think going larger than a 62mm throttle body is advisable on a naturally aspirated 4.0L for a couple reasons. First, the plenum bore on the intake needs to be opened up or there will be a misstep that can actually hinder flow. Second, the big throttle body can actually reduce the intake velocity, hurting performance at slower engine speeds. The 62mm size offers a good balance between increased airflow and intake velocity in non-supercharged or turbocharged applications.

Don’t think 20hp and 20lb-ft sounds like a lot? Keep in mind the difference between a “pedestrian” 5.2L Grand Cherokee and the nearly legendary 5.9L Grand Cherokee is only 25hp/35lb-ft. And the difference between a 5.0L Camaro and a 5.7L IROC-Z is 15hp/45lb-ft. So dust off that credit card and upsize your power without upsizing your engine.

Also, whether I buy a highway car or not, I think I'd gladly put a new engine in the jeep should it need one.
Header summary:
Header
The factory 4.0L engines were equipped with a tubular exhaust manifold that actually doesn’t flow that bad. However, nearly every stock 4.0L manifold we’ve examined has cracked at or above the collector gasket area. A combination of a long downpipe imparting leverage on the header collector and a lean-running injection system that creates high exhaust gas temperatures are two big causes for the high failure rate. Adding an aftermarket header made of thicker stainless or mild steel will not only improve the survivability of your exhaust system, but will offer increased exhaust flow for better scavenging of the cylinders. In other words, the exhaust flowing out of the cylinders will be able to pull the incoming air/fuel intake charge into the cylinders more efficiently.

Huge Filter in a little home, I know. I might try taking a hole saw to the front frame to welcome a little more air. It's -2 right now, so I'm just dreaming, at the moment.

The wierd angle of the filter going into rubber accordion must be restrictive. If I attempt a fix, I'll try to eliminate as much restriction as possible.
You can peep the filter I attached to my valve cover at the top of the pic. From what I've read, that needs to go and I need to reinstall piping to air filter.

I took my digital calipers to the rubber intake and it's 2.85" just above the manifold and the spectre tub is 3". I'll try sourcing a 3" tube.
I riveted some rolled sheet metal I had laying around together and bolted to frame at the bottom, to make the heat shield. I've been rocking this for about two years. I'm pretty happy with it. I've considered buying a prefilter for dusty conditions, but at $30 - I don't feel like they are necessary. There's got a be a way to get more air in there. Maybe cut a hole in the front and and cover with screen and vent intended for home use.

I was looking at the rough country diff covers. You can get both D30 and D35 covers for a little over $120 including shipping. Will a full cover really offer enough benefit to make it worth the extra coin? I mean there's no sense in guarding the top and if the bottom hugging pieces are thick enough, they mount the same way a thicker cover would so what is the difference? Plus they look BA as hell in my opinion lol.

And about the TB, that just convinces me more that 62mm is the way Inm going. Found a guy on eBay who does it with a new butterfly valve included for $67ish. Just gotta have a plan to handle the Jeep being out of commission for a week plus.
JK stock diff cover stress test -- I assume this is the same as our stock cover. AX, Hammer, AR10, Shotgun, AK47. sweet..

I watched the vids from ROKMEN years ago where they put like 100k lbs on a RIDDLER differential cover and it didn't fail. ROKMEN's site is down, JP is down.. wtf. Maybe my isp?

@RemembertheMallamo --
What the hell does your name mean? Mine's a bit off as my xj is actually a 2000 (and live in wyoming at the moment).
I looked at strokedjeep, or Leigh performances site, again. I don't know if they replace the butterfly with a thinner one, polish, or halve the throttle shaft like the ebay service. I'm going to e-mail and ask.
Core Charge (refundable) for outright purchase, or advanced exchange
1991-95 4.0L/2.5L - $59
1996-2004 4.0L/2.5L - $69
LINK HERE $99 before shipping, they do offer advanced exchange.
I'd probably go with the more complete service for an extra $30, if the one guy just bores it out.
I emailed the guy that offers the cheaper service on ebay to see if he replaces any parts or just bores the TB. $60 for bore link
Will let you, and whoever else might care, know what I hear back. Emailed all three services to see who replaces what.

- Custom CNC throttle blade – 50% thinner than stock
- Bored to 63mm – stock necks down to 52mm and we remove most of the neckdown
- Halved throttle shaft w/ low profile high strength screws
- Semi-polished air inlet
- Easy to install in about ½ hour

Remember The Alamo... Texas, Mexico, US history? My last name is Mallamo, pronounced like Alamo. Most everyone pronounces it wrong so I always say like the Alamo.
The $60 service is boring and a new butterfly valve. It doesn't say anything about how thin the valve is though, I'm not too worried about that.
The $99 one is 63mm, not sure if that's gonna be any better than 62 with a stock intake mani. He also puts in a thin butterfly valve and halves the throttle shaft...? Not even sure what that means lol. The advance exchange is nice but I don't think worth the extra $30.
All that is stated clearly in their descriptions

I got the Alamo reference. Every time I read it I think of marshmallows... or mallows. Don't know why.
I can't send mine in. Rough. Can try to pick one at the jy, I guess. Waste of money. I have so much stuff I should sell but never do. Have 2 sets of stock flares, bumper moldings, wi powered seat bases... blah. It'll all end up at the junkyard probably. Maybe I'll hunt for a local machinist to bore it or do it with a dremel. Ghettofab

Damn.. I'm really undecided. I guess I could buy an extra TB and then sell it to a forum member or on ebay at 0 profit just to get me by while I'm getting one bored. Tempted to do it with dremel, I know I cant do much wrong with it, but would prefer a perfect product.
Response from dude who does the $60 bore.
So THERE.. That's why I ask questions, because I learned something. Quick response, too.
Edit:
Some guys off jeep forum gave them rave reviews. I'm stoked. Crossing fingers that the junkyard has a throttle body (and WJ shifter) for me. Getting up early just to go check. Sourced Jeep Forum Topic

I bore it out to 62mm and replace the butterfly, I have done half shafts in the past, but have had a few break, I feel the strength of the shaft outweighs any minimal increase you might get. I do not polish the bore either, the inside of the intake is way rougher than the precision machined surface of the bore of the throttle body.
THanks,
Craig

Locker is undecided. If I did, it'd be up front. However, I have a low pinion DANA 30. If I had a garage, I'd try to find a high pinion, or better front axle and then lock it. For this year, I think my focus will be (possibly): Banks Header and new catalytic converter, get exhaust welded - rear tire carrier bumper -stiffening up my super spongy rough country lift kit and going up another inch - rear main seal and oil filter adapter - brake lines - and some other random stuff.
I'd like to buy a gun, too. All that, along with a few trips back home, a moab trip, and some other vacations, ought to keep my pockets on empty for the year.

Bought another throttle body!
$50 bucks at the junkyard this morning. I wasn't happy about that. I'll have two throttle bodies, so that it'll be easy to drive the rig while one is off getting bored out.
ANYONE WANT TO BUY A STOCK THROTTLE BODY AFTER I GET MINE SWAPPED?
I may consider taking a loss on it. Maybe it'll go on fleabay.
Also, broke my phone so I can't upload pics for now.
