You need to take your title and registration, along with the other owner, to the tag office. The closest one to you is in the South Hills Shopping Center located off US1 south of I40 in Cary (near Northern Tool Supply). They will have each of you sign the titles as though you're selling and buying. Do not fill out any info on the title until you are instructed to do so by the clerk. The notary fee has to be cash, $3, I think. The other fees, which are controlled by the vehicle value, are cash or check. You will need to have the odometer mileage and your insurance policy number. Insurance info is not required if you're just requesting a title and not registering(tagging) it. The new title will come in the mail, but you can drive away that day.

Plus you cannot get a tag for it until you get it inspected which sucks. That is a pretty new law. You have to buy a 3 day tag for $15 so you can drive it in for an inspection.

Well, kinda sorta. If the vehicle is currently registered, which in NC means it is inspected, then no inspection is required at time of sale. I recently put a restored BMW R100RS back on the street. It was titled but not registered at the time. For that, I had to get the temporary transit tag to get it inspected before registering. My recently purchased Cherokee and recently sold Ranger were issued tags on the spot because they were each currently registered. NC no longer uses inspection stickers so the date sticker on the license plate is the only way to tell that the vehicle is inspected. No inspection, no updated tag. Hope this helps.

You are right. The last one I tagged was the Jeep and it had set for a while. I thought I read on the DMV site that you had to get it inspected before the tag was issued because they are setting it up so they both run out at the same time. I am confused about the no sticker thing though. I took one car to get inspected and they didn't put a sticker on it. The next car I took they did put a sticker on it. lol

Yep. All electronic and kept track of via plate number I think. I am a bad boy. Bought mine about a year ago and have not gotten it inspected yet.

I still haven't figured out the logic of the inspection scheduling. I bought a used car when NC was going stickerless and didn't have to have it inspected for two years. I actually took my registration renewal form and went to get it inspected a year after I bought it and the mechanic was the one who noticed that my renewal didn't require an inspection. I still don't understand how that happened. If your tag dates are current, your inspection is current, no questions asked.
