Is it just a toy or is it your daily? If it's your daily, you might want to look at just getting a 3 to 3.5 in lift. The taller you get, the bigger your tires get. That means regearing axels and trimming and other stuff. Regearing axels gets pretty expensive. Trimming fenders is cheap. I've got a 3.5 lift. I run 31's on it now. I just finished trimming my fenders in preparation for 33's. But of course since it's my daily I'm gonna have to regear my axels or accept paying a small fortune in gas (since mine is my daily as well). Where do you ride at? I hit up local service roads just to play around on. Although they can be misleading. (check out my pics) I was about a mile in and drove up on a field that looked safe. Turned out it was a swamp. I don't have an electric winch yet so I had to hand crank my XJ out of a bottomless mudhole with a come-a-long. Not much fun. I've read about Gulches in Laurens, but I've never been because all the footage I've seen on you tube is pretty intense and I'm not geared for it nor can I spare to have my XJ down for more than a day.
its my daily so i planned on gettin a smaller lift...theres just alot to choose from. plus i would need to save up since i only work part time. i just got it a couple days ago so i havent really gone off roading yet, but i look forward to sooner or later

Nice! Mine's a '91 with 207K on it. Still runs great, but I've had to do a lot of typical repairs that are required at 200K miles. The I-6 will run forever as long as you maintain it. Let me know if you have any repair questions. I'm by no means a pro. I'm still learning a lot, but I've also done a lot so far. I'd love to see some pics of your XJ. I need to post some new pics of mine. I've recently trimmed my fenders to prepare for bigger tires. It looks a lot different than it does in the pics I've got posted now. My next project was going to be regearing my axels, but I discovered a rear main seal leak a couple of days ago. I guess that will have to come first.
My girlfriend and I have just recently bought her an '89 XJ. It's super clean under the hood, but needs some work on the fuel system. I've replaced the fuel rail, injectors, and fuel filter and it's still acting up a little. As soon as this rain clears, (because I have no garage or any cover to work under) I'm gonna replace the fuel pump.
