usually the ratio is stamped , my stocked gears were stamped 3:55 right on the ring gear

yeah I dont know. I spun it all the way around and didn't see anything else.

ok, i found this thread and it does look like I have 3.73s in the axle/rear.

10 2994 Dana d 37768 p81 41 11 17 is what the guy had in his truck.
I noticed some diffrences in my numbers. I can tell the first set of numbers must be production date. I wonder what the P8L831 means.

hmm thats good to know , ill take a look at my old stock gears tomorrow and see exactly how there stamped , but i really dont remember a part number on them

what year is your truck? maybe they did it on new ones? and I am reading something on Mallcrawlin about long and short pinions. Does that means I would need the proper drive shaft to go with a certain year front rear?

mines a 97 , but maybe they labled the grands differant , my brothers tj had the ratio stamped right on them too , im not sure about long or short pinions just high or low pinions , i did notice yours was a low pinion

ok wait so maybe i was wrong , mine do have a part number 1 1697 dana d 42701 p8l811 39 11 288 and i know there 3 :55 ratio , my brothers tj for sure had the ratio stamped

how can you tell if they are high or low? And I thought some people say low is strong but then I thought I saw on extreme 4x4 that hi is better?

hi is deff better , high pinion the the pinion is towards the top of the diff , once you see em and know what they are youll understand

and all this time I thought mine was a Hi just because it was a ZJ because someone told me that my buddy could swap his 93 zj axle into his 91 xj but he would be going from a low to hi because "all zjs come with hi". guess that dude was wrong lol.

if you can get a high you'll be set , they mixed stuff up so much thru out years , just look for the right one , do some research

i figured they are better just because it keeps the drive shaft up higher so when you lift the truck that shaft isn't on as much of an angle plus it helps clear rocks or stumps or what ever.

id rather have ujoints , unless its those new gangster rcv axles wich i wanna get when i feel like throwing up the 900 bucks for em
