If the thermal fuse blows Will only have high speed cause its the failsafe. Its an easy fix can either buy new fuse assembly or get a thermal fuse from radio shack and splice it in place of old one.
So it is inside the fuse box on passenger side wall under the dash?
By messed up I meant gummed up. My reverse lights wont work and from time to time I have to move around the shifter to get it to start. I read all the tutorials on cleaning the NSS but I couldn't remove mine, the bolt holding it on wouldnt budge. I gave it a shot yesterday but got very frustrated.
I just got the xj and need the reverse lights working to pass inspection which is why I am looking for someone to help ASAP.

I will give it another shot before I pony up and pay someone. I asked about a shop because the local place I took it to didn't know much about it and would only replace the NSS not repair it ($200 for the part alone). I have no problem paying a knowledgeable shop $100-$200 to just clean it.

I live about 20 mins north of West Chester. I always feel more comfortable at specialized shops, even if its a 4x4 shop I would feel better. I am new to the area and the last jeep I owned was in 06 so I could use guidance from a trusted shop on keeping this 96 running great.

I never done a NSS before but I need to clean mine and my gf's also. They are causing us problems now.
I just took out the part that u pointed to in the picture, there was a lot of foam and dirt clogged in the metal thing the wires was hooked up to....
I see there's two metal coils and one thick metal coil and something else that is blue inside the metal housing

Which one is thermal fuse?
I also shined a flashlight in the hole where this housing was bolted on, I can see that there's a lot of foam and dirt clogged up on lower portion of the heater core. Would this cause any problems?
And I saw there was a relay behind the glove compartment. What exactly is it for?

Thermal fuse is that round cylinder in the middle of that mess. I cut it the wires as close to it as possible pick up a thermal fuse at rafioshack 1.98 or so then splice it in.
