Looks like I have no choose but to spend more money is it possible to install with the tcase still on the jeep

could have either option. NP242 will have a "4x4 Full Time" Option on the selector console.

Look at the tag under the jeep on the t case. Or look at your 4x4 lever and if it don't have a full time mode, it's a 231, like Dukie said

Most likely. If the shift pattern includes 4 FULL, 4 PART, and 4LO, it's a 242. If it's just 4HI and 4LO, it's a 231
