I want to spend some money and make the Jeep really reliable for commuting 30 minutes to school every day. Then they countered with the possibility of getting another car thats slightly used and getting rid of the Jeep.

Hey when was your age we had a 84 cherokee on 31's and one day my ad bought my brother and I a 1968 Porsche 912 as a project. It needed some work but otherwise was totally rad. Me being a dumb kid I choose the jeep over that car. In hindsight both were cool and fun but if I had kept the 68 and sold it a few years later I could have bought 4 cherokees.
Guess what I'm trying to say is cars will come and go during your life so don't get too hung up about them just have fun.

It's okay. We didn't like you much to begin with. So, win/win overall
fritz makes a good point but i'll toss my .02 in.
correct me if i'm wrong but i think one can still get their hands a wagoneer if so inclined. they made lots more xjs right? there will be fewer xjs in 4 year's time but i don't think they'll be extinct just yet.
if your folks paid for the 98 and are thinking about getting you a good commuter car be grateful. what you're experiencing right now is what i think dave chappell called "white people problems"
if you paid for it and they're holding it over you that it isn't in your name i'd leave it sitting in the driveway, join the air force, get paid to learn an actual skill and experience some of the world or at least u.s. it's a learning experience far greater than anything you'll get at stevenson.
...then go to college on the gi bill. i know it sounds like a far fetched plan but you always have options even if not as drastic as outlined above.

I am not going into the military. There are too many people that I know who had or are having a miserable experience being in the military and too few stories of success from the military.
I paid for my last Jeep 100% myself, i parted that out with 0 help from my parents, and bought my 98 100% myself and fixed it up myself. But they always pull the "my house my rules" or "because i said so" bull****.

I saw a 65 f-100 with 14k miles on it go for 7400 on ebay the other day. Fairly certain they didn't make a million of those. Same thing for original Bronco's and Land Cruisers. So I'm pretty sure you'll be able to find a XJ. **** Scott will have about 30 by then I'm sure he'll sell you one.
