yeah, you can do that. Burns bearings up in things pretty quickly.

one thing i read about it is tighten the belt until you can only turn the belt 90 degrees in the longest distance of the belt... so between the power steering pump and idler pulley i think. but ya you should only be able to twist the belt 90 degrees

Yea mines to tight lol, is that why my steering box is leaking from where the pitman are is?
