I live on Long Island and just purchased my first Jeep about a month ago, its a 2001 XJ Sport. I'm having trouble finding a mechanic who really knows the inline 6cyl. 4.0 motor. I'm having a misfiring issue and none of the shops I've taken it to can diagnose the problem. Any recommendations??

put a vac gage on it to check your valves if it bountes around than you have a valve prob .and a compresion gage as well to check your comp.if you dont have good comp it will miss as well.there is also an ignition pick up were the old disy use to be (cam sensor)check for cracks in it or water.

I haven't put a vac gauge on it yet but I have noticed the rpm going up and down at idle which I just assumed was the misfire. I did do a compression test and came up with about 125psi in each cylinder which is usually good in most gas engines. I'll also have to check that ignition pick up. Thanks for the Info.
