As you already said, aside from the illegal spots good luck finding one within at least an hours drive of DC. What I do is check out Google maps a lot, and you really get a sense of how overdeveloped the area is, sure there might be like an acre of woods for every five identical cookie cutter neighborhoods. If you know people in the country though with farms and alot of land they usually know a couple other people with large plots of land.

haha thanks yeah thats basically what I usually do... just sit infront of the computer and try to find nice areas. then the boring search for the owners of that land to see if at least they will allow me too... Sadly I had a great offroad spot in the germantown area, a friends farm with 200acres but they ended up selling their farm last year to a developer... yay more little neighborhoods...

I am not from around here, but i have been stationed here for a few months and we have been to one pretty good one up at greenridge. it is an ohv trail like 18 mile loop through the woods and mountains. it is really cheap and you can camp there. good for atv or bikes as well.

The haggerstown trail system is still in the works and not offical. I dont know too much about it except for the guy running it has it cut onto other peoples property so it has some kinks it needs to work out.
