Check out www.adkforum.com
Keep in mind that it's a hiking/outdoorsy community and you won't get much wheeling advice there. You will get tons of info on what you're looking for...canoeing, backcountry camping, hiking, etc. Don't get a site at a state park. There are many backcountry/primitive sites that
are free...some back some remote dirt roads, on water, etc. A few that pop into my mind that you could ask about.....Moose River Plains Rd., West Canada Lakes Wilderness Area and Siamese Ponds Wilderness Area. The Adirondacks are a beautiful, special place. You could spend a lifetime there and still not see everything they have to offer. I'd love to hear how your trip goes. Early June...just be ready for black flys.

its awesome up here. i live in warrensburg (5 miles north of lake george). the farther north you go the better. lake george is nice and all, but its still too "city life" and is hardly in the adirondack park. check out Blue Mountain Lake, they have an AWESOME museum up there and have primitive camp sites all over up that way.

mettowee is a great offroad park. camp sites right on the property. there is a lot of mud (clay mud) but lots of trails too. its a fun trip for a day and they hold a lot of events throughout the spring/summer/fall.

I agree with Nate ^, Lake George is nice but its barely in the park. Go up north further if you can. Personally i love out near Saranac lake, Keen valley area there is tons of hiking and high peaks. (If you don't have Verizon as a service provider be prepared to have no cell service too)

Warrensburg.....my first stop after a trip to the High Peaks is the Warrensburg Mickey D's!! Lake George is similar to visiting the Jersey Shore. Nice place, but there's better things to see and do.

Spot on right there....Keene Valley on up thru Lake Placid and Saranac Lake are my favorite areas!! If you're in Lake Placid the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery is a must visit!!!
