Hey guys quick question. I found this locked 8.25 on CL (it's probably being sold by someone here lawl!) and I'm pretty sure I want to get it.

http://miami.craigslist.org/mdc/pts/4122573075.html

Since my XJ is an AX15, it has 3.07 gears so my question - since this axle has 3.55s, would this simply be an direct axle swap or would I have to match other components? Excuse my noobish question - I'm use to Subarus where you have to match EVERYTHING for a gearing change.

Would have to get a matching front axle or rehear your current one. A 3.55 front axle will be the most common one in the junkyard, and to pull it yourself shouldn't run you more that $200. The 3.55s will help with power and gas mileage if you have bigger tires and IMO is the best gear for 31-32s on a 5 speed XJ.

But short and simple, front and rear gears have to be the same, if you want to use 4wd properly.

Gotcha. Thanks for the insight. The guy is also selling a 3.55 front axle with new bearings and discs. Since mine are currently worn to all holly hell, if I pull the trigger, I'll just get the whole package.

Thanks man. I'm going to pick up the whole package - front and rear axles. The rear axle already has the locker installed but I'll ask about the washers/springs.

Now it's time to bug my neighbor and try to get into his shop so I can do the swap not on the side of the street.

Just saying yor already have it out, you might as well replace the worn out parts the washers shouldn't be more then a couple $, & the spring & pin kit is $30 shipped from Aussie locker, I just bought a set for mine.

Switching to 3.55s in a manual equipped Xj is like us auto guys switching from 3.55 to 4.10s. If youre running 31-33 inch tires or plan on it then go for it. Just go get the front axle out of an automatic Xj to match the rear gearset. You can put that axle in your Xj and drive as is but wont be able to use 4wd untill you get the front set matched to the rear.

Well, I scored both axles and 8.25 has the Aussie already installed. I even got an extra set of wheelbearings! All I need to do now is swap but I'm starting to think I might as well install a lift while I'm underneath.

My plan has always been to lift it 3" with 30 or 31 inch tires. Nothing major. I'm seriously glad I found these gears though - 3.07s are great for fuel mileage but meh for torque delivery.

One day I'll be done. Don't see it happening anytime soon though.
