Well today I started ripping apart the Bottom Half of the engine!



What is in store!

1. Oil Pan Gasket
2. Rear Main Seal
3. MOPAR High Flow Oil Pump
4. Front Seal
5. Timing Chain

That is it for right now! If you have been following this thread you should remember what the top of my engine looked like when I pulled the VC. Well since then I have been running what ever I could to clean it out. Tranny Oil, Seafoam, Diesel, Some motor flush gunk. And I have been changing the oil every 1500 miles with Rotella 15/40. I think it has been working although my Oil pressure still sucks.

I have some build up on the bearing caps and what not but not nearly as bad as the rocker arms.

So other than my list is there any other small jobs that are pretty easy to tackle down here that may make my engine life longer?

 

replace the crank bearings?

 

Got a lil more work done on the XJ this past week.

Replacing the timing chain had a few troubles. Found a good write up to help anyone else looking to do it here

This is the new one installed. I still need to tighten it up to the 80ft lbs but it is on and lined up at the moment.



New oil pump I still have to get the pick up installed. I gonna start looking for a place to machine press it on since it doesn't seem to want to mate with just brute force.



Cleaned up the Oil pan and repainted it. Cleaned up the Harmonic balancer also (nice having a solvent tank at work). Debating on Painting it.



Also noticed my engine in on its last leg hence horrible oil pressure so it won't be long before I have to replace the engine.

I have 3 of the connecting rods with a lil play and 3 of them are tight as all hell. Hopefully this engine will make it till I can save up for either a reman one or maybe buy a crate stroker. I don't have enough engine knowledge to create a stroker.

Great thread, I as well just read it front to back. Sucks to hear your motor's about to crap out on you though. Great job getting rid of all the rust in the floorboards and rockers, i really like the bedliner idea. May have to try that once i get some money.

 

Thanks A lot. I finally got my Pick up installed on my Oil pump. But I have been to busy to spend any time working on it. So it still sits in the garage waiting to be put back together.

 

nice job stryker i might have to come to radcliff and check it out in person you really have done a lot to that thing. and i noticed you said something about leaving your sway bar disconnected, mine had a 3.5" lift and it didnt have a sway bar and i drove it all the way to ft riley kansas and back and didnt have any problems so you should be ok

 

Shoot me a PM and come on down. I ain't worried about the sway bar anymore. I had been driving with out it for a lil while now. Thanks for the comments.

 

i gotta do a little bit to my jeep and ill let you know. the only problem im having is my front tires wobble when i turn past a certain point havent been able to figure it out i think maybe its the alignment but ill pm you when i get it figured out

 

UPDATE!!!


Well I took the High flow pump to a machine shop and he installed the pick up for 10 bucks.

5-90 always recommends soaking your two piece rear main seal in oil well I done that and all it did was Shear when I tried to install it. So on my second attempt I used what we all use to get something hard in tight spots. "Astroglide" worked like a charm.

Finally had about 8 hours I could dedicate to the Jeep. So I finished everything up. Had some problems with the Oil Pan fitting over the new pump apparently the pump is a lil larger. So I had to beat the baffle down about a 1/8 of an inch so the oil pan would seat. Took a lot of beating and mocking up till finally it was flush "enough" lol.

Took my time with the instal coating each side of the oil pan gasket with RTV. Reattached everything else I took off to get to the oil pan.

Tried to start and got a NO START ugh! no power to starter!. Played with the connections to the starter and voooorrrooooom!

I was a lil worried I would not have any oil pressure still. But with doing the High flow and the timing chain and rear main and front seal... I have a wopping 60 psi on cold and so far with my testing it hasn't dropped below 40psi but I havn't driven it hard yet just let it run to operating temp and took it for a spin around the block. But so far so good I am thrilled.

Who wants to go wheeling now. WOO HOO!!!
