Great way to start the week off...got that "no bus" code and none of my gauges work. Looks like I won't be taking the bus this morning haha.

Last time I took my woods Jeep wheeling at Big Fork I knew I stripped something in my front axle...well I cracked the cover yesterday and this is what I see right way haha

Chattanooga xjs-forumrunner_20140414_133811.jpg

Sheared at least 4 spider gears straight off. Good thing I have a spare Dana 30 in my yard.

My question is this, I had ALOT of play in my front driveshaft after this happened. Like it would turn from 9oclock to 3 o clock position with ease. Would the spider gears being messed up cause that or are my gears out of mesh?

Oh and does anyone know where I can buy bare steel at around hixson/north chatt. Like 2x1 rectangular tubing

The broken spiders would cause that. I have a set if you need them instead of pulling a front axle.

Why bother with only two? Don't most new spider gears come with side and spider gears? Throw a lunchbox locker in it and be done.

If two are broken I bet the others are weakened so replace all of them and you typically have to buy all of them anyway.

I'd have to agree with replacing them all with a locker. That's assuming it's an offroad rig and that lead to their failure.

Best case if the remaining two don't have any fatigue stress, they probably have some nicks in the teeth at a minimum. This will both create a stress riser in those teeth as will as lead to spalling of the gear teeth.

Meshed gears should typically be replaced as a set, with a few exceptions. This is especially true for hypoid gear sets.

It's not an off road rig, but I am a mechanic by trade but always worked on newer stuff mostly front wheel drive and don't have much experience with axles. so I'm interested in learning so I can build or repair mine someday
