hey guys ive been part of this forum for a pretty long time now. I started off with a 91 xj as my dd that gave me nothing but problems but i stuck with her until i had to sell her. I got another car that was better on gas and the transmission was going out on it and plus i missed the jeep world way to much. So i had an opportunity to get a 1995 jeep grand cherokee limited with a 4.0 and jumped all over it. Now ive only had the jeep for id say about a month and im running into a problem. I put up a post on here about a creeking sound in the rear of my jeep when i turn i aslo posted it on jeep forum where i got a lot of response. Some people said that its my shocks, springs or bushings. Some say that its my internal gears of my diff. i know its not these because ive checked all of those and the only thing that look bad are the shocks. Someone said no that noise sounds like my 249 tcase is going bad or the viscous coupling is shot. Now to me this is horrible news number one because i dont know what that is and #2 i dont have tools, space or the time and money to replace the tcase or that part. They were telling me how i should do the 242 or 231 swap. Is there anyway someone would be able or even willing to help this kid out.?

a creaking dosent sound like the rear diff, that's usually a humming sound, those have rear control arms right? did you check the bushings?

the 231 swap would be a good idea cause you got the 2wd option and it could save you on gas, and its a a better T case

good luck, if i had a big enough garage and enough tools i would offer my space and help but kinda like you i got nothing

thanks man i really appreciate it. yes ive check the whole rear suspension. everything's solid

Crawl underneath there with the rear end up in the air and rotate the driveshaft back and forth to see if you can duplicate the squeak. Had the same problem on a Safari van and it was just the rear universal joint.

so your saying put her on jack stands in the back and rotate the ds? but it only happens after driving for a while?

Exactly. The Safari did that at first too. The bearings in the U-joint would only squeak after a while because of the heat due to lack of grease (most are not greasable from the factory). Then over time they would squeak all the time.

One more thing though, you're not really going to be rotating the driveshaft per say. You will be moving it one way then back the other only a little bit at a time since the Jeep should still be in Park (or 1st/Reverse if manual) when you do this. If it really is the u-joint the squeak will be evident in just that little bit of movement.

have you checked the fluid in the rear end? i had squeeking noises on my cherokee when the fluid was low in the rear pumpkin...if you havent, just the plug and if none runs out of the hole then add some...other than that i dont know

Sounds like a U-joint or lubricants in the rear, So i agree with the other guys on those two, I would check there.

Everythings taken care of. The tcase was shot and the rear gear oil was wayyy low and over due.
