86 would be HP... they were LP later.

The Dana 44 started appearing in 87 in the HD towing package. An 86 MIGHT have had a 44 as part of the HD towing package very late in the model year. There was also supposedly an AMC 20 available in 86 as part of the towing pack, but I've never seen an XJ one, just MJ models.

why would you put a hpd30 from a 86 cherokee that's newer than 97? it has smaller u joints, if its from il its prob half corroded, Yeah HP D30 with the stronger joints is all 97-99 XJ's. The 00-01 XJ's have the stronger joints but are LP not HP. so in the end I am not drunk and most likely if it had a trailer hitch it had a D44. I wouldn't mind that rear end myself. although I would build a 9in first cuz its even better... if you would like to talk drivetrain lmk I love it.

I thnk ODB does that to you a lot. the 00-01 like kotsie has is a LP they have SUPer strong shafts. the older models 86-96 hp have small u joints. the 96-late 99 early 00 have big u joints and solid shafts. although are best when there replaced if you wheel often or plan to wheel. if you would like to tell me how to build a axle and why I have a lp d 30 and a d35 in my red xj that's got around 10 grand in it lmk. I will gladly listen to why I should install a stroker vs a stock lower end with mild cam, and fully built head. or why I should do a twin stick atlas vs a d300np231

92-99 axles are HP. Nothing changed in 97. 00-01 are LP housings- structurally the same strength. The weakness is gear related to the way the gears are cut. ABS axles have the bigger stronger 297 joints compared to the 267.
