Quote: ok so im starting to piece together my steering. i just ordered some ruff stuff 3/4 heims. i am making this without welding, ill be taping the links for the rod ends. im stuck between 7075-t6 solid 1in aluminum or 1.25" ODx.25" wall DOM, the Aluminum is a lot cheaper than the DOM, but the DOM isnt as strong. if i go with the Aluminum the other thing differnent that i have to do is drill it out. what do you guys think i should go with?
So aluminum is cheaper and stronger but needs drilled I'd say go with it aluminum ain't hard to drill just clamp it and use a drill press

thats what i was thinking, my brother works at a machine shop so i can have him properly drill the aluminum and tap it since the 7075 is hard to drill without knowing what you are doing. the aluminum is like 80 bucks for 8 feet and dom is about 110 for 8 feet. the dom is about 40,000 tensile strength and the aluminum is 80,000. i was just wondering what everyone thoughts were on it.

solid 1.5 tie rod steel is wayyy stornger than aluminium and weight there wont be a huge deal as long as your not a serious rock cawler. then run a 1.25 drag link. and machine shop can use a lathe and cut it out and even thread it for you for some 7/8 or 3/4 heims. FYI in illinois you do know heim joints are NOT legal for on road driving? dont you think i would have them kotsie???

solid steel rod is expensive. im doing this on a college budget right now. and 95% of my jeep isnt street legal but i still drive it everyday. my tires are sticking out more than 50% without any fender flares, full racing exhaust on it ( ive gotten pulled over a few times for this) previous owner had installed. and a lot more not technically legal but cops never give me any problems about it.
