DFW get together
I'm in Roanoke (north of Fort Worth, near TX Motor Speedway). We're not real close, but we might be able to meet up sometime. What kind of probelms are you having with your XJ? Maybe I can help.
I do consulting work and move around a bit... just relocated for a long-term gig, I'm in Aledo, between Ft Worth and Weatherford if anyone wants to meet up and talk Jeeps. I'm looking for someone to do some fab work (bumpers), and possibly a GM LS swap, or help me do it in their shop (not for free, of course).

Aljay; being a local guy that does fab work (I'm out by Texas Motor Speedway), I would be real interested in your thoughts on a custom trailer build I have in mind. Here's the link to the thread:

If/when you have a minute to review and post some comments, I would greatly appreciate it.

2 donor vehicles
expectations as far as interior fit finish ?
Timeframe (yours and mine)

I'd like to have some influence on the design, and would be glad to help build - I live in an RV park (have a real house in San Antonio), but I have no shop and suck at welding. My idea was to procure the tube stock, sit down with you and design it, and then pay you to put it together, and I'd help, of course.
Nothing real radical, just a prerunner design that doesn't look like I stil some drilling pipe and threw it onto the Jeep... set up for a winch later, and some cool hand holds on the sides - something I saw when I lived in Washington (state).

Acquiring 2 usable donor vehicles will certaily delay the start of this project. It will likely take time to find two that are suitable and at the right price. Ideally I would connect with someone who is parting-out a 2door, with plans to send to junkyard when done. Then maybe if I offer a few bucks more than junkyard, I can have it cheap. Getting lucky enough to do something like that twice is the problem. Or maybe I pick one up for a little more cost and part it out myself to reduce my net investment. But I wouldn't have the heart to that to a 2 door that's in good shape - know what I mean?
For the interior I plan to do it custom, and to do it myself. May or may not use any of the stock interior pieces, just depends on feasibility. I'm guessing that it will be mostly, if not entirely custom. What I plan to do is build in sort of a camp kitchen (with sink, storage and other stuff) inside the forward hatch. I would go maybe 2 feet in and build a divider that goes ceiling-to-floor, side-to-side. Everything behind that would be storage accesible from the rear hatch. May build in some drawers, racks/shelves, etc. Somewhere inside and/or attached would be a generator, water and fuel storage, CB Radio, and places to store a lot of hunting & camping gear. That's not everything, but you get the idea.
As far as time frame, I'm in no particular hurry. I want to do this right, do as much of the work myself (or help where possible), and as economically as possible. The less I can spend on the "shell" of the trailer, the more I can spend on equipmet/gear, etc. Plus I still have build plans for my XJ to complete as well.
One more thought for you. I've had a few folks recommend building an aluminum trailer frame (rather than using the donor frame) and attaching the XJ body panels to that. I'm guessing this will make it lighter and make some of the rest of the build easier than working on/with the original frame. My questions with this are 1) Could this still be made off-road capable (without enormous additional expense)?, and 2) How much would this cost me over the donor frame approach?
Your thoughts?
for the axle I had assumed I would use one from one of the donors, but I'm not married to that. I just want to make sure I end up with a trailer that is off road capable and sits at the same height as the Jeep.
