The shock should not be the thing making the difference between the coil falling out and it being OK. It may be time for some limit straps. Or a better coil retaining apparatus.

how do you guys use stock steering with a good size lift? does the tre hit the sway bar mount? my brother's 4" lift gets pretty close, i wonder how it does while its flexing

cut it off, ZJ's are really fun without sway bars
but to answer your question, did you push the axle forward at all? cause alot of the times that causes it.
