If any of you saw my Jeep R.I.P? thread in the tech forum, you'll know that mine died. There are some that are giving good ideas to make sure the mechanics right. But, I wanted to ask the local crowd if there are any shops that'll do a rebuild on the cheap if I need to in the end. The place I had it towed to, closest available, Pep Boys off Park Meadows and Quebec, wanted to buy a used engine from the springs and charge me 2500-3000 to do it. Which is just BS. I don't want to give up on my 93, and the 90 is on the back burner. But 3g's to get a replacement used motor I know nothing about doesn't make sense.

God no man!! That is flat ridiculous!! Please, look around!! Check out little shops. They tend to be cheaper, and many times do as good, or better work!! If you are looking for things down here in COS, let me know. I know a few folks down here, and might be able to get a decent deal.

I'm going to do some of my own investigating this weekend (even though the weather will be ****.) I've done a lot of work outside of the engine so it's a new world for me, but thats why this site RAWKS! With the amount of money I've poured into it to this point, with the amount of time, with the bonding I've done...There's no way I can give up at this point. No friggin way.I'm fightin.

haha little shops are your best bet. Most of the time its they look bad when due to being there forever. went to a shop like that for my radiator. walked in before we s aid anything the guy asked if that was a cherokee radiator even though we've never been there! he knows his stuff if someone can do that. He also located the problem in a quick glance! it took me an my dad a good 10min to find the crack. Unfortunately he couldnt fix the problem. But he did get us a dang good deal on a new one.

Now as for the garage...you could have fun with that. haha

I have good news. The weather finally got good so I went out there and pulled the distributor. The gear was on the pin! I inspected it and it looked like the gear was filed down pretty bad, but couldnt be sure without comparison. To confirm I went to the JY and pulled another one and sure enough, the old gear looked like hell in comparison then they JY pull. SO, I'm calling it a day and tomorrow putting the JY one in.

I suspect I'll have to find TDC and recalibrate timing if that gear wasn't catching, or will I? Can I just drop it in and try to turn it?

Goddamn I hope I can take this thing to the M&G!

Got the timing right, thanks Frank and COS. But it's toast, I've determined that the cam gear on it must have teeth. Put a new distrib with a good gear on it, got it timed. It would crank and then pop and spit for a few seconds and then die again. I decided it would be a good idea to brink the crank back around to 0 on the timing mark and pull the cap to see if it was where it should be. It was about 120 degrees past where it should have been.

Think I'm just going to part it out.

You can do that, or toss a JY motor from a crashed rig in it, your call...

Really not feeling rebuilding or replacing the engine. I think we move the tires, battery, interior over to the 90 and sell the rest.

Don't know the condition of the tcase, because that was my next project before the engine died. I suspect the case is good, it's a 231, I'll sell it cheap not knowing its true condition. The AX-15 tranny is in good shape. The whole clutch system was replaced by me in December and January. Think we have to take out the dash gauges since it's heavily modified and it wont fit in the 90, but I'll put it in our next one...you know it's coming.

I think other than that, if I put it on CL and on the forums here that I'm parting it out that we'll get some money back. I think I'll post it on CL to part out, get it yourself because I don't want to look at it anymore, let alone pull a wrench on something that dont work...

I might ship something to somebody if they really need it and it's an easy pull.

But so far, what I'm keeping is the interior, including seats and door panels, battery, and tires. There will probably be a couple more things, maybe the AC unit, but probably not.

When we do buy another cherokee, it will be 94 or newer. The stupid azz design of the internal slave cylinder on 92-93 model years made me decide that shiz wont happen again.

Have to admit, Julie was rocking it today. She turned the crankshaft, aimed the flashlight, bumped the starter, kissed the jeep, then kissed it goodbye later on...

I'm between losing a family member and losing a mutt. Half torn, half thanking it's done.

Come to think of it, I might be interested in the t-case. I have a 242, and it works fine, but I'm thinking of picking up a CHEAP 231, and rebuilding it with a 4.1 kit, and a SYE. Let me know what your bottom dollar is, and I'll get back with you...
