I would recommend wiring the winch directly to the battery. It's probably a good idea to get nice battery clamps with accessory studs though.

As an example, my friend has a Warn 12000 lb winch, which he attaches to his car hauler trailer and uses it to winch Ford Highboy pickups (5400 pounds) onto the trailer. He just carries a regular car battery around and uses alligator clips to connect the winch to it. One day when moving his shop we winched 3 or 4 trucks onto the trailer (not all at the same time) without recharging the battery.
