I live 145 miles north of Billings in Petroleum county. There are literally hundreds of miles of BLM trails, and several "county roads" that are more than most rigs can handle when it's wet. I personally live 22 miles of gumbo from the gravel. It is an off-roaders paridise. Just don't come alone. I would open my place as a checkpoint/saftey area if a group wants to get together and make a weekend run thru and check it out. There is no cell phone service, and the nearest gas is 49 miles back down to Winnett. You can camp on any of the BLM and could stop by my place if anyone needed phone or laptop connection to the outside.

Wow! I'm really interested in knowing more about this, Zim, whether the rest of the Montana group want to come or not. We have some BLM oil exploration areas just like what you picture and it is a blast to wheel. My Billings wheelin' club might be interested in checking this out. Will you please send me more details? Location? Are you interested in leading a group and showing the best routes? My email is travarartist@gmail.com. Cell: 406-850-9704.

Hey, the rest of you Montana guys, what do you think?

dirtster, it all starts 26 miles north of Winnett. Travel north like you are going to Crooked Creek boat ramp on Fort Peck Res. When you come to the 79 Trail road, stay on it instead of going on north to Crooked crk.. The gravel ends a mile past that last intersection. As you are traveling east towards the Mussellshell there are several BLM trails that go to the north that a guy can investigate. Keep comming east on 79 trail. The county road gets nasty for the next 28-30 miles. (I have been the only rig to town from here since Feb. 15th.) This is of course much easier when it is dry. As you come around, you would want to make a little run north into the CMR, before 79Trail turns south around my place. From here, head south across Dovetail creek and go to Dunn Ridge. Yikes, Dunn Ridge is one of those potentially fatal county roads. Strait up and down, narrow ridges with several places that a guy can slide off a couple hundred feet. Don't go there in the mud. Come back off Dunn ridge and head south to Blood creek. Cross it and keep heading generally south. Could make an awsome day trip and never even leave the county roads. But I recomend bringing a GPS and hitting some of the BLM trails as well. I will try to figure how to put up a bit of a map or Google Earth mapped route later today.

picture is on Dunn Ridge, (a county road) a couple of miles south of here.

Hey 2000, come on over. Your stock rig would be fine as long as you come in dry weather. A stock rig can have a lot of fun as long as one doesn't push his limits. Once the mud hits, it is swampers only! (or bring chains for all four).

Dirtster, I have to make a run to Billings today. I got your cell number and will be calling you once I get south of Roundup.

Oh yeah, Turkey season begins next weekend, if a couple or three of you want to get out and make a drive be sure to throw in a shotgun.

Thanks for the call, Zim. I can't come this weekend (putting a new radiator in my XJ), but I'm open to about any time as long as it is mostly dry. I don't want to wheel in slimy mud all day. Too, I think it needs to be at a time when you can show us around since it is a totally new area. I would like to check it out for our Billings club as a possible ride site.

So what do the rest of you think? Timing? I'm game, even if it is just one or two of us.

I'd like to join but I doubt I'll be able to make a trip that far east anytime soon.

I've planning to get up there where Zim lives but the rains have been so bad I've had to wait. I still plan to get up there though after it dries out a bit (or I grow webbed feet, whichever happens first).
